The Medical Assistant in Training will complete a combination of on the job training and required coursework in an accredited Medical Assistant program over the span of 24 months to learn the essentials of being a Medical Assistant, ultimately achieving a certification as a Medical Assistant assist with diagnostic tests, procedures and treatments ordered by the physician in a family practice environment.

Burnsville Family Physicians is an operating division of Infinite Health Collaborative (i-Health).

Essential Functions:

The Medical Assistant in Training will work in clinic a 0.8 FTE (4 shifts per week) and attend required coursework on campus one (1) day per week.

During completion of Medical Assistant program incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Preparing, stocking, and cleaning exam room
  • Rooming patients and prepare for exam
  • Maintaining an efficient, organized clinical flow
  • Gathering and verifying pertinent patient information; compiling patient medical data
  • Assisting with documentation of patient data into electronic health records system
  • Ensuring coding requirements are followed during entry of patient information
  • May also assist with any of the following:
    • Assist Care Coordinator with patient care services
    • Assist with medical supply inventory and ordering
    • Screen patient calls and respond to patient in a timely manner. Document all phone messages in the patient’s electronic chart

    The incumbent may also be asked to complete the following tasks under direct supervision of a licensed or certified clinical staff employee:

    • Measure vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and document all information in patient’s chart.
    • Obtain blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.
    • Assist physician and physician assistant in exam rooms.

    Additionally:

    • Students may not represent themselves as a graduate of Northwestern Health Sciences University prior to program completion.
    • Students may not represent themselves as a certified or licensed medical assistant prior to completing the program and passing the certification or registration exam.
    • Students must successfully pass the MLT-1070 Phlebotomy/Introduction to Hematology course before performing any venipuncture or finger sticks.

    Upon successful completion of Medical Assistant program incumbent will be able:

    • To verify patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, confirming purpose of visit.
    • To measure vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and document all information in patient’s chart.
    • To obtain blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.
    • To assist physician and physician assistant in exam rooms.
    • To give instructions to patients as instructed by physician or nurse practitioner.
    • To ensure all related reports, labs and information is filed is available in patients’ medical records prior to their appointment.
    • To keep exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, prepare sterilization as required.
    • To maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid change, etc.).

    Education and Experience Requirements:

    • Successful completion of all pre-requisites and testing requirements for admission to Medical Assistant program.
      • All Medical Assistants in Training will complete required coursework at:

    • Maintain enrollment and good academic standing in accredited Medical Assistant Certification program.
    • Receive AAMA or AMT certification within six (6) months of completion of Medical Assistant program.
    • Previous healthcare experience preferred

    • Comply with all applicable laws and regulations, (e.g. HIPAA, Stark, OSHA, employment laws, etc.)
    • Demonstrate prompt and reliable attendance
    • Work in the clinic during business hours
    • Travel independently throughout the clinic (which may include movement from floor to floor); frequent bending, lifting, standing, stooping or sitting for long periods of time may be required
    • Work at an efficient and productive pace, handle interruptions appropriately and meet deadlines
    • Communicate and interact in a respectful and professional manner
    • Prioritize workload while being flexible to meet the expectations of the daily operations
    • Apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
    • Understand and execute a variety of instructions
    • Effectively operate equipment and communicate on and operate the phone system
