Bookkeeper

C. Crane
Fortuna, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 2/23/2023 CLOSED ON 3/24/2023

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bookkeeper position at C. Crane?

Overview:

Thank you for your interest in working together! At C. Crane, we design and manufacture long range radios, WiFi Antenna systems and much more. We craft our products with excellence to bring our customer’s joy. We are a unique and niche company located in Fortuna, CA selling our products through the annual catalog, ecommerce store and many marketplaces not only in the U.S. but worldwide.

There aren’t many companies like ours here in Humboldt, so you’ll be able to put your bookkeeping skills to the test in an industry that not many get the opportunity to be a part of. We are looking for someone who gets excited about the day-to-day Bookkeeping tasks and wants to grow their bookkeeping skills as C. Crane looks to expand and grow. We are looking for someone who has some bookkeeping experience, however, if you aren’t fully proficient in all the areas listed below, C. Crane is willing to train the right candidate who has the passion skill for bookkeeping along with the energy, organization, resourcefulness, and a get-it-done attitude. We have excellent starting documentation and training.

Purpose:

Your job is to record all financial transactions accurately and timely to assist Management and the CEO in making strategic decisions for the company; and to have fun at work (who wants a job that isn’t fun?!?). Our work environment is casual, but we do expect professionalism and punctuality.

Honestly though, the job is not all unicorns and rainbows -- there’s some good news and some bad news…

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first:

  • There are a few days at the end of the month and the beginning of the month where you will be expected to prioritize your work and may have to work on the weekend or on a holiday to perform month end duties. Hours will fluctuate depending on the projects we have on our plates. Also, a heads up that November, December and January are busy months in accounting at C. Crane, so we don’t normally allow vacation during these months.
  • Because we are a small company, sometimes we get to wear many hats such as helping showroom customers and other projects unique to the company. If you’re looking for job that is tightly departmentalized or less cross-team collaborative, then this may not be a good fit.
  • You’ll need to check your ‘inboxes’ in the various platforms that we use every business day. Because of the nature of the work throughout the month, it is important that you see what tasks are being assigned to you and when they are due so you can plan accordingly. Jobs need to be done in a timely manner, so you are expected to keep tasks moving along throughout the week.

Now let’s talk about the good stuff:

  • The work is challenging and fulfilling. You’ll get to flex your accounting knowledge and software knowledge in creative and measured ways with the explicit goal of making the books as accurate as possible.
  • We don’t want to micromanage you. While we expect you to work efficiently and get things done, we focus on open communication, meeting deadlines, and accuracy.
  • You are a part of a supportive team. We are all about teamwork and we believe we are all stronger as a team. We give you the support, training and help you need. You will be working directly with the Accounting Supervisor and the CEO of the business.

Let’s discuss the job requirements:

  • You must understand general accounting principles (not ‘GAAP’, but more the general idea of core accounting concepts like which accounts increase or decrease with a debit or credit and how all the accounts on the P&L, Balance Sheet and different software systems interact with and affect each other). You will be using this knowledge to ensure that the company financials and cash flow projections are as accurate as possible. You can look over an Income Statement, Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet report and identify inaccuracies. You also either know how to fix them or how to efficiently research how to fix them. You must know how to create cash flow projections to assist management and the CEO in making strategic decisions for the company.
  • You must be comfortable with Excel, Software & Computer Use. You understand the ins and outs of software and how to build excel files. You understand how each software and feature affects the financial statements. Everything we do exists on the computer and internet. It is critical that you can navigate a digital environment effectively and efficiently (which means learning new software when needed).
  • You need to be able to think in a creative way in regard to Accounting. Your main goal will be to ensure our company financials and cash flow projections are accurate (from an accounting/bookkeeping perspective), but sometimes we might have limited information, or a unique situation where you will have to do additional research to come up with a recommended solution to the Accounting Supervisor and CEO to ensure financials are as accurate as possible. You need to proactively come up with ideas on how to solve these puzzles and don’t need us to hold your hand all the time, through the challenge.
  • You are great at time management and getting tasks done by the deadline. You are also excellent at raising your hand for help if a deadline is pressing.
  • You are able to communicate effectively with team members and vendors, and willing and able to call about discrepancies and information needed to complete the company financials.
  • You are organized with your work. You make worksheets when solving problems and you save documents in a digital folder system.
  • You love making systems. You understand that systems make everyone’s lives easier (including future you). You like spending a little more time upfront to create an internal system, documentation or resource that will allow the company to grow and scale effectively.

Some specific things you’ll get to do

  • Post daily financial transactions in accounting software timely and accurately.
  • Prepare and provide daily cash flow sheet for management to review daily.
  • Prepare forms/tax forms including but not limited to 1099s, Sales Tax payments & reports for various states and countries C. Crane is doing business in. Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing reports; advising management on needed actions and/or compliance needs.
  • Work closely with Purchasing Department to ensure vendors are paid timely, accurately and that inventory value received matches POs.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial folders for management and the accountant to review.
  • Prepare month ends on the first day of every month.
  • Maintains historical records by properly filing documents as set forth by C. Crane, the IRS, the CA FTB and other state and country requirements C. Crane needs to comply with.
  • Prepares financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends for management.
  • Maintaining records according to generally accepted accounting principles including recording of general journal entries, accounts payable, cash management, and reconciliation of bank and credit card statements.

What we don’t expect is for you to know how to do all the above, for you to qualify for this job. We don’t really care if you know how to use Clickup, Brightpearl or Loom yet (although that’s a plus), we can teach you that and other things. Again, we expect a passion skill for bookkeeping along with energy, organization, resourcefulness, and a get-it-done attitude.
