The Paralegal I Junior- Division of Enforcement shall provide legal research and litigation support to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Division of Enforcement. The SEC’s Division of Enforcement utilizes a variety of data that contain current, historical, and futures information about sensitive public company data, mutual fund data, and trade/quote data
Responsibilities- Follow established guidelines, gathers, prepares, and summarizes relevant materials for use by litigation attorneys and/or other office professionals in preparation of memoranda and other legal documents.
- Review documents, cross-check information.
- May synopsize transcripts of hearings and oral arguments for attorney use; reviews case-related materials and, for example, identifies potentially conflicting statements or areas requiring further investigation; write preliminary drafts of legal memoranda and correspondence.
- Support litigation attorneys during trial, including courtroom locations, and may include experience in witness interviews.
- Enter data into computerized systems, and update databases and spreadsheets.
- Obtain documents from paper and electronic files.
- Perform document review and research and summarize findings.
- Assist with document productions.
- Maintain, organize, and file office records and documents.
- Assist in processing notices, orders, and action memos.
- Maintain, organize, and file office records and documents.
- Perform complex database searches related to filings (e.g., Name Relationship Search Index) and other legal database searches (e.g., basic Westlaw and/or LEXIS).
- Maintain chronological/searchable databases of office precedent (i.e., comment letters, minutes of meetings, and office policy “significant outcomes” memoranda).
- Prepare and maintain database monitoring and tracking status (e.g., track and/or organize materials using agency automated database/systems, such as word processing software, spreadsheets, computer graphics, presentation software, or database applications)
- Travel may be required
- Other duties as assigned
- Associate degree in a related labor category field such as Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or Criminal Justice from an accredited college, university, school, or educational institution that has been accredited by accrediting bodies or organizations recognized by the US Department of Education
- Minimum (2) two years of Paralegal experience with a specialty in Litigation (Trial)
- Paralegal Certificate (Certificate is not required if degree is in Paralegal Studies only)
- Ability to provide favorable credit history
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience drafting and reviewing various legal documents such as motions, briefs, subpoenas, legal memoranda, and correspondence for attorneys.
- Experience with legal research using LexisNexis and/or Westlaw.
- Ability to work effectively in an extremely pressured environment.
- Ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines under direct supervision.
- Possess and use excellent oral and written communications skills.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail in preparing work product.
- Ability to work concurrently on a variety of projects; flexibility in shifting focus.
- Keen sense of accountability and taking ownership over projects.
- Experience with interviewing witnesses and providing litigation support during trial including courtroom locations.
- Possess a professional demeanor and can collaborate well with all team members and staff.
