Title: Asylum Managing Attorney

Work Location: Anaheim, CA

Term: Full-time, occasional evening and weekends required

Position Status: Exempt

Pay Range: $105,000 - $115,000 per year commensurate with experience.

Reports to: Immigrants' Rights Managing Attorney

About the Role: CAIR-LA's Managing Asylum Attorney will primarily be tasked with increasing the impact of the department within Muslim, African, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and other immigrant and refugee communities in the Greater Los Angeles area through affirmative applications like Asylum, Adjustment of Status, Temporary Protected Status, and other forms of affirmative relief. This includes supervising more than three attorneys, two legal coordinators, and leading strategic initiatives that increase the department's legal services, efficiency, funding, educational outreach, and policy influence. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a growing team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives to increase the impact of CAIR-LA's Immigrants' Rights Center in coordination with the Managing Attorney
  • Directly supervise, mentor, and support attorneys preparing affirmative immigration applications, non-attorney staff and provide opportunities for professional development and growth
  • Prepare immigration applications and represent immigration clients on immigration issues in front of USCIS, EOIR, and BIA
  • Train staff in immigration law, representing clients before USCIS, and preparation of various immigration applications
  • Manage relationships with partners, funders, and elected officials to further services to clients
  • Assist the development department with grant writing to maintain sustainable funding for IRC services while overseeing and supporting the preparation of grant deliverable reports
  • Support with strategic external messaging on issues of immigration policy and reform for the Immigrants' Rights Center in collaboration with communication and policy department
  • Create and supervise outreach and educational strategies to increase the departments impact
  • Lead the Immigrants' Rights Center's participation on campaigns, projects, and publications such as legal report, annual report, immigrants' rights reception, etc
  • Monitor and improve issues related to services to manage on-going engagement and client expectations
  • Assist with updating and maintaining department manual to ensure office procedures and case management system are being followed and improvements are made to ensure efficiency and increase productivity
  • Help supervise and monitor client referrals to third party legal and social service providers
  • Under the direction of the managing attorney and deputy executive director, participate in and supervise the immigration departments engagement in coalitions advocating for immigrants' rights

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5 years of experience in immigration rights and legal services
  • 3 years of experience managing others
  • Law degree from an American Bar Association accredited school or DOJ accreditation
  • Strong time management skills with a demonstrated ability for meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with outstanding attention to detail
  • Comfort working productively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking experience
  • Experience working with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Access to a working vehicle and the ability to drive throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area
  • High degree of self-motivation and creativity
  • A strong commitment to civil rights and CAIR's mission
  • Basic computer proficiency including knowledge of Office 365, OneDrive, and WestLaw Next
  • Knowledge of cloud applications such as SharePoint, Office365, and social media applications (preferred)
  • Conversational proficiency in Arabic, Farsi or Urdu (preferred but not required)
