Position Summary
Student Support Specialists are after school tutors that work within our Students, Parents, and Communities Engaged (SPACE) Program. Specialists will work with students needing extra help in areas of reading, science and math, for elementary, middle, and high school. Students will receive tutoring in their areas of greatest needs, but we are especially interested in hiring tutors with a strong background in Language Arts.
This is a part-time position expected to work approximately 5 hours per week in the afternoons and evenings.
Salary
$35.00 per hour

Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide in-person tutoring sessions with students at the CAIRO office or in schools. Tutoring will include working in a one-on-one or group setting with a diverse student population.
- Facilitate family involvement with schools and student success through the SPACE program.
- Meet with students and review subjects relevant to their skill levels and academic performance. Carefully explaining how to solve problems and checking completed work.
- Use culturally responsive teaching strategies, understanding the challenges of disrupted education, English language learners, and immigration.
- Help students develop study skills and organization techniques to help improve their academic performance.
- Keep reports on students' activities and share reports with supervisors.
- Supervise groups of students and model appropriate behavior.
Abilities, Skills, & Experience
- Previous experience as a tutor preferred.
- Knowledge of & experience with technology and troubleshooting skills required. Google Suite experience strongly preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; good organization/ planning skills; good analytical skills to read outcomes reports and measure a child's progress.
- Home visiting or other direct experience working with parents is preferred.
- Required Language: English.
- Preferred Language(s): Somali, Swahili, Arabic, or another African language.
- Advanced understanding of math and science concepts at a middle school and high school level.
Education Requirements
- REQUIRED: High school diploma and capacity to tutor high school level coursework
- PREFERRED: Associate degree, B.A., or equivalent experience
- REQUIRED: Some coursework in STEM subjects
Work Environment & Location
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit (at times on the floor with children) and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

- Use of a personal vehicle with reimbursement will be required.
