Salary Range:    Based on Education and Experience - Initial Placement up to Step 6


Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Dean of Student Success, and in collaboration with the Program Coordinator of Accessibility and Veterans Services, the Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) provides equity-minded life coaching to support general & Accessibility Services students to fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course competencies and completing their educational and career goals.  The Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) provides career and academic advising to all enrolled students, supports students in selecting their program pathway, and develops student education plans in collaboration with students to guide their individual learning. The Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) assists students with individualized success strategies, including goal setting, time management, study skills, and more.


The Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) evaluates student disability documentation for participation in Accessibility Services. In addition, the Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) conducts student intake interviews using the interactive process to determine appropriate academic adjustments, assistive technology, and support services. The Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) and the student partner to create an Academic Accommodation Plan (AAP) and Accommodation Letter to remove or reduce disability-related barriers to successful completion of the student’s program. The Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) must be familiar with assistive technology and alternate media in order to make recommendations for student accommodations, to implement AAPs, and also to provide basic instruction on use of various types of technologies. The Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) provides consultation to campus faculty, staff and administrators regarding student access and accommodation needs, while maintaining current and up-to-date anecdotal records of individual counseling sessions with, and liaison work for, students with disabilities. 


The Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) evaluates and documents student progress; refers students to appropriate on- and off-campus services; works closely with campus representatives to maintain and improve accessibility in Calbright programs and curricula.


The Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) is expected to participate in academic advising and other department meetings and professional development activities, as well as participate in college-wide activities and participatory governance committees. Working in collaboration with campus success, learning, and instructional team members, the Academic Success Counselor (Accessibility Services-DSPS) plays a vital role in helping Calbright College achieve its mission to build and deliver lasting and equitable solutions that make California a leader in workforce planning, preparation, and placement through regular meetings with students throughout their journey.



Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities 


The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed within the scope of work.


  • Provide comprehensive educational and career advisement and accessibility counseling services to prospective and current students; including regular meetings with students to establish and maintain on-going relationships.
  • Assist students in assessing aptitudes, abilities, and interests, including advisement on current and future employment trends for career decision making.
  • Conduct intakes with students with disabilities who are applying for services to verify disability documentation and determine eligibility for services.
  • Develop an individualized Academic Accommodations Plan (AAP) for each eligible student to authorize specific services and reasonable accommodations, and implement accommodations and services.
  • Serve as an advocate for disabled students within the college and with outside service agencies. 
  • Assist students in assessing, planning, and implementing immediate and long-range goals.
  • Provide students with resources and community services directly or through cooperative arrangements.
  • Assist students by providing general counseling/success strategies as well as to coach students on how to successfully navigate challenging life issues that interfere with academic success. 
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase student retention and completion. 
  • Assist students with disability management, coping, and problem-solving techniques.
  • Prepare and deliver an Accommodation Letter for eligible students approved to receive educational accommodations. 
  • Develop an individualized Integrated Accessibility Educational Plan (AEP) for each eligible student and monitor students’ academic progress.
  • Prepare and maintain a cumulative record for each student according to the applicable reporting requirements, relaying pertinent information to college personnel as needed, and respecting the confidentiality of such records as required by law.
  • Work with partner organizations to assist students in a smooth transition to a work experience site location.
  • Study the needs, interests, abilities, achievements, and aptitudes of students with disabilities, and recommend appropriate learning strategies and educational accommodations for students.
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships off campus, with outreach centers, neighboring colleges and universities, and community resource agencies; and on campus, with instructional areas, special programs, and administration regarding student success, retention, and recruitment.
  • Provide career advisement to prospective students to assist in establishing  appropriate educational pathways.
  • Meet with current and prospective students to develop  student education plans.
  • Assist students with time management, study skills, and other academic success strategies.
  • Deliver academic advisement, including holding regular meetings to build ongoing relationships with students with regard to academic matters.
  • Identify resources – academic and career – to assist students with temporary and ongoing obstacles to learning and academic achievement.
  • Provide support for students quickly when they receive early alert notifications.
  • Actively participate in team and cross-functional meetings, as well as  participatory governance activities as a member of the Calbright College student success team.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and work independently on the development of assessments, student learning outcomes and curriculum.
  • Ensure effective use of tools and/or third-party services that support academic advisement services.
  • Support the preparation, data collection, and presentation of program review efforts as well as efforts that support continuous program improvement.
  • Collaborate with and Deliver on special projects as required by the Program Coordinator of Accessibility and Veterans Services.
  • Apply Title 5 and California Education Code regulations in an online academic environment.
  • Coach and/or provide leadership for student teams and outreach programs.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to professional development and continued innovation and improvement of successful academic advisement by continuously advancing current knowledge in academic advisement best practices, curriculum, articulation, and state and local initiatives that inform the profession.
  • Participate in curriculum development, design, implementation, and evaluation to maintain and improve the academic advising program. 
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas. 
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics. 
  • Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: meet all scheduled appointments unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department curriculum; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance and progress; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district wide activities and committees as assigned.
  • Perform duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college, and center policies in the performance of duties.
  • Communicate, meet, and coordinate with the Department lead in planning and developing curriculum and academic advising procedures. 
  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with staff and students.
  • Participate in participatory governance on College committees, ad hoc panels, constituency groups, and/or work groups. 
  • Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of academic advising materials, effective academic advising methodologies, and informed academic advising.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Knowledge of various types of disabilities, the functional limitations of people with disabilities, applicable education code, state, and federal disability laws, and assistive technologies typically used with a range of students in higher education.
  • Knowledge of trends and challenges facing community college students with disabilities.
  • Ability and commitment to promote the maximum independence and integration of individuals with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention; universal design; student retention; career exploration and decision making.
  • Commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population in an online environment. 
  • Have an equity-minded focus and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse faculty, staff and administration across the college to meet the needs of students in an online environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of career and technical education programming.

A successful Counselor (Accessibility-DSPS) will systematically cultivate long-term, collaborative, collegial, and strategic relationships with key stakeholders within and outside of the College.
  • Ability to develop learning outcome assessments.
  • Must be able to provide distance academic advising. Assignments may include day, evening, and weekend hours.
  • Must be able to provide academic advisement using current student services technology. Update programs, curriculum, and academic advisement procedures and strategies as technology and software change.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, quickly adapt to changes, prioritize projects, and communicate clearly to team members impacted by any changes. 
  • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, staff and faculty.


Minimum Qualifications


  1. Master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling 


OR, 


  1. Master’s degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a Bachelor’s degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or (B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities


OR,


Possession of a valid California Community College Credential; OR, Equivalent (as determined through the Calbright College equivalency process)


  1. AND,

Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse abilities and academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use.
