Salary Range: Based on Education and Experience - Initial Placement up to Step 6


Position Overview


The Counselor (Academic Success Counselor) provides equity-minded life coaching to help students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course competencies. The Counselor (Academic Success Counselor) will assist students with individualized success strategies, including goal setting, time management, study skills, etc. The Counselor will also identify resources for students and make referrals to student support services. All Academic Success Counselors are expected to participate in unit meetings and professional development activities, as well as participate in college-wide activities and participatory governance committees. Reporting to the Dean of Student Success and working in collaboration with the other success and learning team members, the Counselor (Academic Success Counselor) plays a vital role in helping Calbright College achieve its mission to build and deliver lasting and equitable solutions that make California a leader in workforce planning, preparation, and placement through regular meetings with students throughout their journey.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities


The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed as within the scope of work.

  • Provide comprehensive educational advisement to enrolled students; including regular meetings with students to establish and maintain ongoing relationships.
  • Meet with prospective students to develop comprehensive student education plans.
  • Assist students in making decisions regarding their educational plan leading to certificates.
  • Assist students with time management, study skills, and other success strategies.
  • Provide equity-minded success coaching to help students focus on the habits of success and establish personal milestones toward academic completion and job obtainment.
  • Provide students with the highest level of customer service through effective phone, virtual, and video (zoom) communications.
  • Identify barriers to student success, develop action plans to focus on completion, track and communicate opportunities to increase a student’s awareness of self-efficacy and agency.
  • Collaborate with various teams to stay on the cutting edge of industry standards and employer expectations in order to best coach students.
  • Provide educational guidance to assist students in making decisions regarding program pathways and occupational/career goals.
  • Prepare and maintain student records using current technology.
  • Relay pertinent information to college personnel as needed, respecting the confidentiality of such information as required by law.
  • Provide support for students for issues impacting retention, persistence, and academic success and referring students to resources as appropriate and necessary.
  • Participate in curriculum development, design, implementation, and evaluation to maintain and improve the academic advising program.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to professional development and continued innovation and improvement of successful academic advisement and support by continuously advancing current knowledge in academic counseling best practices.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: meet all scheduled appointments unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of students enrollment, attendance and progress, post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college wide activities and committees as assigned.
  • Perform duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with Calbright College policies in the performance of duties.
  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with staff and students.
  • Participate in participatory governance on Calbright College committees, ad hoc panels, constituency groups, and/or work groups.
  • Communicate, meet, and coordinate with the Department lead in planning and developing student support systems as well as academic advising procedures.
  • Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of success coaching materials, effective success coaching methodologies, and informed success coaching.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of computer software and technology related to student and other educational services.
  • Ability to synthesize, analyze, and explain the organizational and student ecosystem as well as the student journey.
  • A successful Counselor (Academic Success Counselor) will systematically cultivate long-term, collaborative, collegial, and strategic relationships with key stakeholders within and outside of the College.
  • Ability to develop learning outcome assessments.
  • Capacity to work with stakeholders in a participatory governance environment.
  • Ability to develop learning outcome assessments.
  • Must be able to provide academic success counseling in a virtual setting. Assignments may include day, evening, and weekend hours.
  • Must be able to provide counseling services using current student services technology.
  • Update academic success counseling procedures and strategies to reflect technology updates and software changes.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, staff, and faculty.

Minimum Qualifications Requirements


  • Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

OR,

  • Possession of a California Community College Counselor Credential (valid for life);

OR,

  • Equivalent (determined through the Calbright College equivalency process);

Working Conditions and Travel


  • Calbright College is a statewide online college where all instruction and support are done via various online technologies both in person and remotely. Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use. When working remotely, employees should be able and willing to use digital communication tools as used by the college, and have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Requires the ability to function in a remote online instructional environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature.
