What are the responsibilities and job description for the TRAFFIC CONTROL TECHNICIAN position at Calcasieu Parish Police Jury?

This is the first of two levels in the Traffic Control series. 
 
Incumbents install, and maintain traffic control devices. Responsibilities may include installing, repairing and replacing traffic signs; maintaining and installing pavement markings; programming, and repairing or replacing school zone flasher beacons; installing and monitoring traffic counters; collecting and analyzing traffic data; recommending the installation or modification of traffic control devices; and maintaining records of work activities.(The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.  Other duties may be assigned.)
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, constructs, tests, programs, and sets a variety of traffic signal and control equipment which may include pavement markings, school zone flashers, traffic counters, and/or related traffic control devices.
  • Collects and analyzes traffic data; makes recommendations based on findings.
  • Prepares, processes, and maintains various forms, work orders, operational records, traffic data, and/or other related documents and information.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not require supervisory responsibilities.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.), and one year related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS 
  • Valid Driver’s License as per State law or requirement.
 
The ability to obtain the following certifications:
 
  • International Municipal Signal Association Level I Signs and Markings Certification within two years from position hire date.
  • International Municipal Signal Association Level II Signs and Markings Certification within two years after receiving Level I certification and/or being hired into the position.

  • Traffic control practices and procedures;
  • Traffic signal and marking layout principles, procedures, and methods;
  • Standard uses of traffic control devices;
  • Parish geography;
  • Recordkeeping principles;
  • Applicable tools and equipment utilized in the traffic control trade.
 
SKILLS
  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic control devices;
  • Using and caring for applicable tools and equipment;
  • Reading and comprehending maps;
  • Preparing operational records;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

  • Positions in this class typically require:  climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. 
  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects. 
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, environmental hazards, intense noises, and travel.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and moving traffic.  Employee must be ready to work in all kinds of weather.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and fumes or airborne particles.  
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

UNIFORM 
An employee in this position will be supplied with a uniform, provided by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.  The employee is responsible for abiding by the Police Jury's Uniform Agreement.
