Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, plan, organize, and direct the operations of CAPS, including the following tasks: develop and maintain the CAPS budget; provide a variety of mental health services to appropriately respond to students' acute and chronic psychological problems, promote mental health among the students, ease the adjustment to academic life and assist in student retention and success; assist in administration and supervision of the post-doctoral and practicum psychology training programs; and supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel and psychology trainees.

Representative Duties:
Plan, organize, and direct a variety of programs, projects and activities related to the operations of the CAPS center; oversee the day-to-day decisions regarding the operations of CAPS. E
Formulate, implement, and revise CAPS protocols, policies, and procedures in accordance with those promulgated by California Lutheran University, as well as federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines. E
Develop the CAPS budget; monitor and control expenditures. E
Direct the preparation and maintenance of a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records, and summaries related to the CAPS departments. E
Implement safeguards for confidentiality; oversee staff compliance with these and other record-keeping policies. E
Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel; interview and select employees and recommend transfer, reassignment, termination and disciplinary actions; plan, coordinate and arrange for appropriate training of subordinates. E
Collaborate programmatically with all Student Affairs departments as well as
Disability Support Services, and other administrative units. E
Communicate with other administrators, university personnel, and contractors to coordinate activities and programs, resolve issues and conflicts, and exchange information. E
Serve on appropriate campus and Division of Student Affairs committees or work groups, as assigned. E

Clinical Services:
Serve as the principal psychologist/therapist handling the most complex cases; provide mentoring and direction to junior staff. E
Perform diagnostic interviews and elicit psychosocial and psychiatric histories.
Develop case formulations, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Prepare initial documentation, weekly session notes, and closing summaries of treatment for students. E
Oversee the provision of crisis intervention services with weekday walk-in and triage appointments, weekend and after-hours coverage and emergency response as needed. E
Assist students to acquire off-campus urgent care assistance, consult with hospital psychiatric evaluation and treatment teams, and when appropriate, assist with discharge planning. E
Oversee design and implementation of other psychological services such as group psychotherapy. Conduct short-term individual, couple, and group psychotherapy. E
Assess students for substance abuse, suicide/homicide and other risks. Manage risks appropriately. E
File reports to police, child protective services, and/or adult protective services, as needed. E
Provide appropriate off-campus referrals for evaluations and long-term psychotherapy. E
Provide and oversee psycho-educational outreach to students. E
Consult with faculty and staff regarding student mental health and counseling issues, and related matters. E
Provide information, training, and resources to faculty, staff, and students. E

Assessment Oversight:
Review current assessment data concerning the nature and severity of student mental health issues as well as recommendations by CAPS staff regarding allocation of staff time and resources to address such issues. E
Assess the needs of staff and faculty for information and resources regarding their work with distressed and distressing students; provide a faculty/staff psycho-educational outreach program to respond to those needs. E
Incorporate other assessment instruments into services offered by CAPS, as indicated. E
Assess counseling outcomes and write reports. E

Promote safe work practices within each area of responsibility, enforce safety rules and assure employee compliance with all safety rules and guidelines. E
Meet with the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students to provide information or obtain advice, consultation or support as needed; represent the Dean at meetings and other activities as requested by the Dean. E
As a member of the Division of Student Affairs, provide event support for campus-wide programs, as needed. E
Participate in department and division meetings for project planning, policy development and direction setting. E
Perform related duties as needed.

Adult psychosocial development, psychopathology, personality theory, and psychotherapy techniques.
Technical aspects of field of specialty.
Psychiatric medications and indications for medication evaluation referral.
Required standards, design and management of Psychology Training programs.
Principles and practices of effective management and supervision.
HIPAA, FERPA, CoMIA and other relevant guidelines and policies.
Budgetary practices and control.
Professional standards and guidelines, professional code of ethics and other related state and federal laws.
Safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department, and university.

Effectively coach or mentor beginning psychotherapists.
Demonstrate appropriate role behavior for mental health professionals as a model for beginning psychotherapists.
Engage with diverse constituencies
Work cooperatively with others and maintain effective customer service towards all persons contacted during the course of job performance.
Budget management skills

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: MSW, MFT, Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology or related field and five years of post-licensure experience in a college or university counseling center including demonstration of progressive administrative/supervisory responsibilities in a college or university counseling center.

Preferred Qualifications:
Seven years of progressive administrative/supervisory experience in a college or university counseling center.
