Overview
Calspan ASE is the world’s number one supplier of ground-based testing solutions and expertise for the aerospace industry. Our customers get a single, experienced partner to help them efficiently validate engine and airframe performance across development, production and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). The Systems Engineer serves as the technical lead and interface between the Calspan engineering team, subcontractors, the government, and the end user. This role coordinates engineering activities such as technical scope, requirements, system interfaces, design reviews, and work estimates for systems used in aerospace research.
Responsibilities
- Perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability for aerospace test systems.
- Perform analysis at all levels of the system to include concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, and operation.
- Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into aerospace test systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
- Responsible for coordination of the engineering deliverable(s); plans, assigns, and directs engineering tasks on project. Owns technical supervisory responsibilities for interpreting, organizing, and executing these assignments.
- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary government and contractor team to plan, test, analyze, and report through multiple program acquisition phases.
Qualifications
Preferred Education / Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related discipline;
- 5 years of practical work experience in design engineering, systems engineering, or similar roles with large industrial equipment or facilities;
- A combination of education and experience equivalent to above
Preferred Knowledge / Ability:
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and productively as an individual contributor and collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills, demonstrated initiative and attention to completeness, accuracy and detail.
- Must be a self-starter, able to balance priorities between multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to clearly analyze symptoms while quickly and calmly delivering solutions.
- Knowledge of systems engineering concepts, principles and theories.
- Familiarity with aerodynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and electro-mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with risk assessments, FMEA and HAZOP analysis.
- Experience with design or operation of wind tunnels or related aerospace research and test equipment.
- Understanding of supersonic and hypersonic airflows, heat exchanger, combustion, turbomachinery, CFD or other related technology.
- Design & analysis experience with high temperature environments (>2000°F / >1365K) which includes transient heat transfer analysis, liquid and air-cooling methods, high temperature materials (e.g. super alloys, ceramics, etc.) and coatings (e.g. thermal barrier coatings).
- System design/CONOPS experience.
- 10% international and/or domestic travel
