RHETORIC COACH - ENTRADA SCHOLARS PROGRAM
SUMMARY:
The Rhetoric Coach position is part of a team of two Rhetoric Coaches who are responsible for providing college level writing assistance to a group of students taking a college course as part of the Entrada Scholars Program. The Rhetoric Coach also provides regular updates about academic concerns and needed academic instruction to the Entrada Assistant Director for Academic Development. The Rhetoric Coach will work around the Entrada scholar’s daily academic and programming schedule; they will be present every afternoon and some evenings, as needed. Candidates must be able to come to Calvin's campus during the training, planning, and implementation of the Entrada Scholars Program (June 191-July 20)

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assess 11th grade Entrada scholar’s writing skills through an English placement exam
  • Meet individually to review and give feedback on English placement exam for 11th graders.
  • Help scholars prepare written materials required in their courses.
  • Lead training with Academic and Residence Life staff to equip staff to address writing deficiencies/challenges.
  • Work actively with scholars to assist them in developing approaches that will lead to improved writing skills.
  • Monitor scholars writing skills and immediately notify the Assistant Director of scholars in academic jeopardy
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and opening and closing activities
  • Lead seminar(s) on critical thinking and writing development.
  • Monitor and intentionally address writing deficiencies/challenges with those scholars who will be attending Calvin University who will be placed in ASC 007 in the fall semester based on his/her English placement exam.
CLASSIFICATION/BENEFITS:
Profession/Technical, non-faculty status position of approximately four weeks duration; no benefits.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in English strongly preferred; multicultural experience with youth; teaching experience highly preferred.
COMPENSATION:
$1900 Stipend divided into two installments in July.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

COMPLEXITY
The position requires the ability to solve problems and to deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Instructions may be furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The position has the authority to make recommendations that will affect procedures, processes, and practices involving customers or employees within the same department.
DECISION MAKING/JUDGMENT
The responsibilities of this position typically involve projects and/or assignments that have considerable decision-making authority regarding procedures, plans, and schedules. In dealing with students daily, 5 days a week, this job is almost entirely independent. In moments of crisis, there may be procedures in place, but the Academic Coach must be able to work independently.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The position requires regular participation with employees or customers, deals with items of a routine nature with occasional supervision. Participants use information and expertise to influence outcomes and solve problems.

The work in this position is performed within routine office conditions, usually without exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions.
