Direct administration of radio nuclides and the retrieval of data for the purpose of providing diagnostic or therapeutic services.
Responsibilities
• Responsible for the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals and assuring their quality and purity. • Prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals to patients, intravenously or by mouth for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes under the direction of the Nuclear Medicine physicians. • Responsible for performing radioimmunoassays and for imaging procedures as requested by the physicians. • Operate and exercise quality control over Nuclear Medicine instrumentation, such as scintillation detectors, gamma cameras, and automated well-counting system to provide patient and physician with quality diagnostic procedures. • Administer non-radioactive pharmaceuticals, either intramuscularly or by mouth, in preparation for, or support of a nuclear medicine procedure. • Enhance and quantitate the data collected by means of a dedicated computer. • Observe strict precautions in handling isotopes to safeguard against overexposure to radiation with further knowledge of the procedure to be undertaken should there be an isotope spill or contamination in the laboratory. • Work with and assist in the training of students. • Due to the specialization within the Nuclear Medicine Department, duties may be classified as imaging or non-imaging work. (The non-imaging consists of RIA's, RRA's, and tests performed with patients blood or urine.) • Following aseptic technique, gain intravenous access for injection of radioactive and non radioactive medications as ordered by physician.
