JOB SUMMARY
Conducts patient evaluations, structures occupational therapy program and provides treatment for medically referred patients. Supervises on-call O.T. personnel. May supervise rehabilitation aide, occupational therapy assistants, and students. Accepts responsibility for safety and well-being of the patient during treatment. Accurately completes all required documentation. Evaluates and treats all patients referred for occupational therapy, actively participates in management of the department and participates in guest relations.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Must be a graduate of an accredited occupational therapy curriculum.
- Must be currently licensed as an occupational therapist in the State of Indiana.
- Must be C.P.R. certified.
- Must be registered by, or eligible with, the N.B.C.O.T. and pass within 2 attempts.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

- Evaluation and treatment of all patients referred for occupational therapy, which may include inpatient, outpatient, and Home Health Care patients.
- Receives and interprets physician order.
- Determines possible contraindications to prescribed treatment.
- Establishes all treatment programs.
- Establishes treatment goals.
- Administers treatments to patients using accepted standards of practice, utilizing neurodevelopmental techniques, muscle reeducation, ADL’s, splinting, and any appropriate physical agent modalities per TX protocol within the A.O.T.A. guidelines to decrease pain and increase function.
- Instructs patients in appropriate adaptive equipment, splints, and wheelchairs on level and environmental surfaces, to increase independence in activities of daily living. Instructs in exercise programs for restoration of joint and muscle function.
- Instructs families or caregivers in exercise programs, appropriate adaptive equipment, transfer techniques and activities of daily living.
- Discusses patient treatment, care, and progress with physician.
- Documents evaluation results, treatment plans, goals, and maintains daily progress notes and upon completion of treatment, summarizes progress, treatment, and expectations in discharge summary.
- Is responsible for patients’ recertification of visits with insurance carriers and worker’s comp.
- Actively participates in management of the department.
- Is responsible for making determination of possible noncoverage by Medicare and informing the patient before treatment begins.
- Is responsible for filling out incident reports.
- Attends monthly department meetings.
- Takes part in inservice lectures.
- Keeps up to date on occupational therapy procedure, attends continuing education courses, makes recommendations for improvements in present department clinical techniques, procedures and programs, and keeps professional staff informed about these new techniques.
- Assists and directs others assigned to these activities to maintain neat, orderly, and safe work area.
- Assists director in updating department procedure manual.
- Assists director in department quality assurance program.
- Completes all necessary paperwork on a daily or assigned basis
- Participates in guest relations.
- Contributes to a positive environment through cooperation, reporting promptly as scheduled for work and other contributions outside of established performance standards.
- Participates in hospital committees upon the request of director.
- Participates in marketing of department services to referral sources and potential customers.
- May supervise observation students, level 1 or 2 clinical students, and/or high school students. Follows policies and regulations for students.
- Performs other departmental duties as assigned by Director of Rehabilitation.
