The Opportunity:
Canfor is currently looking for a motivated individual with proven project leadership experience to join our team as a Project Manager/Drafting Designer
The Role:
The Project Manager is a key role in the Capital Program Group and includes responsibilities to ensure the safe, efficient, cost-effective and environmentally compliant delivery of the US West Capital Program. You will assist in planning as well as supervise all aspects of both maintenance and improvement projects at multiple projects at US West sites (Mainly Arkansas, Mississippi, some Texas). Canfor Southern Pine includes 16 lumber manufacturing facilities throughout the southeastern US with 7 in the West Region.
Reporting to Regional Manager of Capital and Reliability, the Project Manager serves as the first-line manager of $5-15 million dollars in annual project load, ranging in size from $25K to $5M. The Project Manager provides day-to-day performance monitoring and feedback and is responsible for full management of scope, design, bid analysis, and construction contractors, along with fiscal management of each project in the program to meet all financial and schedule targets. The Project Manager creates and maintains various reports and documents to measure the status of the program. The Project Manager serves as the day-to-day manager of both small and high-profile endeavors that are often complex, fast-track construction projects and often occurring while the mills are operating.
The Project Manager teams up with managers and staff to work on various aspects of planning, evaluating (cost/benefit), managing operational impacts of construction, and evaluating ongoing operational opportunities. Communication is expected to be well-managed, collegial, and consensus-driven in an environment where constructive disagreements are valued and necessary. The Project Manager may have direct supervisory responsibilities for several staff, including project consultants, field engineers or temporary employees hired on an as-needed basis. The right candidate will have a passion for finding creative, value-based solutions and will thrive in a multi-tasking fast paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the highest levels of safety knowledge and awareness of all project members and contractors
- Identify requirements, develop and prepare written project scope of work and other concept documents for internal Authority For Expenditure (AFE) process
- Work with consultants and OEM’s to create project drawings and specifications as applicable; update overall site and facility drawings after project completion
- Review plans, specifications, and submittals for projects for operational functionality, constructability, code compliance, and building standards.
- Manage formal bid process and selection of OEM’s and contractors
- Determine overall project budget with Director. Regularly analyze project financial status in relation to current budget; advise Management of the project status and problems (or potential problems) on a regular basis.
- Review all purchase requests, purchase requisitions, purchase orders related to projects and monitor progress of each.
- Review all invoices, determine whether appropriate work has been performed and invoiced, approve invoices, apply against appropriate purchase orders, and monitor payments against purchase orders and/or resolve billing issues
- Oversee all construction activities, progress, issues, resolution, and documentation thereof
- Develop and manage accurate project schedules and provide regular status reports
- Study the current facility and operation, assess opportunities for improvement to implement within the selected facility plan
The Candidate:
- Minimum Associate’s degree in mechanical/industrial/civil engineering technology, construction management ideal but not required
- 5-10 years of experience managing multiple large projects in heavy manufacturing or construction industry required
- Extensive knowledge of current project management and project delivery methodologies
- Proven history of successful budget and schedule management
- Strong analytical and problem solving abilities with the creativity and flexibility to effectively respond to continually changing internal and external business conditions
- Proactive approach with “big picture” perspective necessary to manage broad program, while maintaining knowledge, organization, and delivery of project details
- Self-motivated with excellent interpersonal skills and exceptional communication skills: written, verbal, and electronic
- Strong ability to maintain a professional demeanor and to use exemplary communication and leadership skills to motivate others without having direct authority and to achieve results in a strong consensus driven environment
- Ability to work well with all levels of the organization from entry level to upper management and to convey complex technical information to business managers
- Located in the US South with the ability to travel up to 80% with flexible working hours which may include some evenings and weekends
- Extensive knowledge of relevant computer technologies, such as AutoCAD, MS Project, MS Word, MS Excel, Visio, and Outlook Email/Calendar
- Valid drivers' license and passport
Considered Assets:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in mechanical/industrial/civil engineering or construction management or equivalent experience.
- PMP certification
- Experience in lumber/forest products industry considered highly desirable
- Past design engineering experience
- Basic PLC system programming experience (PLC5 and ControlLogix)
