What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Orchestras Manager position at CAPA?
Primary Function: The Youth Orchestras Manager works closely with the Director of Education to oversee and manage all human and financial resources necessary for the operation of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras program. The manager also oversees all operational aspects of the Young Musicians Competition, Youth Orchestras Online, and Young Musicians Showcase.
Additional Information: This is a full-time, salaried position. The selected candidates will be employed by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts and will be eligible for CAPA's full benefits package, including Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance, Life/AD&D/STD/LTD Insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with up to 5% company match after 6 months, 17 Paid Time Off days annually (pro-rated the first year based on start date), and access to complimentary tickets to shows.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Schedules youth orchestra rehearsals, performance venues, concerts and auditions.
- Collects fees and communicates with parents, students and other music professionals.
- Works with graphic design personnel and provides oversight of the CSYO music library.
- Oversees all Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras (CSYO) Programs including Youth Orchestra, Cadet Orchestra, Chamber Strings, Junior Strings, and Columbus All City Orchestra. Duties will include:
- Processes memberships, collects tuition, and oversees financial aid/payment plans.
- Distributes handbooks.
- Schedules dates of concerts and rehearsals and ensures appropriate staffing.
- Creates program books, including content, layout, and program notes.
- Publicizes and schedules auditions, collects applications, and corresponds with candidates.
- Maintains and administers the instrument loan program.
- Leads school tours.
- Organizes CSYO retreats.
- Secures location and judges for Young Musicians Competition and publicizes the event. Records applicants and communicates competition information.
- Secures musicians to perform in the Young Musicians Showcase at the Ohio Theatre prior to CSO classical concerts. Meets musicians, places signage, and secures proper equipment for the event.
- Maintains student database.
- Suggests new ideas to the overall CSO administration.
- Performs other responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to collaborate with artistic and administrative staff and community members.
- Solid understanding of public-school structure and knowledge of music and music education.
- Broad operational and theoretical knowledge of orchestras.
- Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by interacting with internal and external contacts in a professional, respectful manner.
Credentials and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, preferably with an instrumental focus.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in music education or working with children.
- Prior database and orchestra management experience preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License with ability to provide own transportation. Proof of personal car insurance is required.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- The selected candidate must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to beginning this position, or agree to become vaccinated within 4 weeks of their start date.
