CAPE FEAR VALLEY HEALTH SYSTEM
JOB SUMMARY: Directs, supervises, and coordinates the functions and activities of the assigned unit(s). Responsible for overall management and coordination of the service to include fiscal resource management, human resource management, capital improvements and quality of services.
JOB RELATIONSHIPS: Responsible to Service Line Director
Positions Directly Supervised: Resource Nurses, Charge Nurses, RNs, LPNs, ancillary staff members.
MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following is a summary of the essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not listed below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time.
1. Plans, organizes, and supervises clinical operations to provide care.
2. Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services.
3. Establishes, in collaboration with interdisciplinary team, positive professional relationships.
4. Facilitates team meetings, daily rounds and communication among patients, families, interdisciplinary team members and contracting agencies.
5. Coordinates and integrates patient care services with other Health System departments/services and those of the community.
6. Establishes and maintains mechanisms to monitor continuing compliance with JCAHO, OSHA, and other regulatory/accrediting agencies' standards.
7. Establishes and maintains mechanisms to determine the sufficient numbers, qualifications, and competency of staff to provide departmental services.
8. Establishes and maintains a mechanism whereby staff members are identified as being competent to safely and effectively utilize the appropriate equipment in their work area.
9. Assumes responsibility for continuously assessing and improving performance via participation in Performance Improvement (PI) activities and Quality Control mechanisms.
10. Provides for orientation, in-service training and continuing education for staff.
11. Makes recommendations regarding space and resource requirements.
12. Participates in selection of external sources of patient care services when such services are required.
13. Takes necessary steps to determine the complete and accurate charging for patient services rendered as well as to monitor, adjust and, where possible, to correct negative expense variances.
14. Develops, implements and evaluates strategic plans and operations via departmental budgets, PI Plan and Management Outcome Plan.
15. Demonstrates the critical behaviors and meets the performance expectations established in the Cape Fear Valley Health System Core Competencies for All Employees (published separately), and the Cape Fear Valley Health System Department Managers Core Competencies (published separately).
16. Demonstrates the critical behaviors and meets the performance expectations established in the Cape Fear Valley Health System “Standards of Performance”.
17. Collaborates with Care Coordination staff daily to identify barriers to patient throughput, intervene to eliminate barriers, and facilitate discharges early in the day.
18. Oversees, facilitates and monitors customer satisfaction, patient throughput and hospital functional capacity through compliance with the Hospital Innovation Project (HIP), if applicable.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Education and Formal Training: Bachelor of Science in Nursing required (or actively pursuing BSN) and current licensure as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina.
Work Experience: 2-3 years clinical experience related to nursing area of management. Minimum of 1-year management or management-related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Demonstrated leadership characteristics. Working knowledge of budgets, staffing, Performance Improvement as well as regulatory requirements. Strong interpersonal skills required. Knowledge of age-specific considerations for patients served. Must be knowledgeable of the N.C. Nurse Practice Act.
Physical Requirements: Work requires long periods of standing, walking or sitting and occasional assistance with heavy lifting. May be required to work variable shifts on occasion. Must have command of the English language and possess visual and auditory acuity for accurate patient assessment. Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.
