Title: Digital Content Editor - Sports

Reports to: Senior Editor, Digital
General Summary of Position: The Digital Content Editor - Sports is responsible for maintaining and monitoring sports content on the newspaper’s websites, apps and social media platforms. The editor is tasked with creating digital-only content and constantly updating and improving the content on those digital platforms through the use of analytics, engaging headlines, photos, videos and related links.
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Duties:
- With a particular focus on sports, pursues and creates digital-only content to complement staff material.
- Monitors analytics to help make decisions on content placement
- Writes clear, concise, catchy headlines that emphasize content’s most unique details.
- Watches social media channels for breaking news and other relevant content.
- Promotes content through various social media channels through engaging promos.
- Rewrites news releases, public notices, etc. to serve as a quick outlet to publish breaking news.
- Maintains awareness of competitors’ content and informs newsroom of where we’re behind – and ahead.
- Clearly communicates best digital practices with newsroom editors and writers to spur improvement.
- Finds new ways to present content through new technology, tools.
- Has an understanding of all other beats of a news operation, including - but not limited to - crime, local/state/national government and politics and entertainment.
- Fills in on digital news shifts as needed.
Education, Experience, and Knowledge Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in journalism or a related field.
- Two years previous experience.
- Thorough knowledge of the newspaper industry and production methods.
- Thorough knowledge of sports, particularly college and NFL football. Familiarity with LSU and the Saints specifically a plus.
- Thorough knowledge of digital technology which includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
- Considerable knowledge of project management techniques involved in strategic planning, resources allocation, leadership technique and coordination of people and resources.
- Considerable knowledge of computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
