Summary of Position:
Responsible for assisting the residents with taking their medications utilizing appropriate procedures outlined by the Resident Services Coordinator and in compliance with the State of Washington WACs. Review of WACs and facility policies regarding recording, documentation in the resident’s chart, sign off of the MAR, signifying completion of the assisted task, and observation of residents changing condition where appropriate are required.
Qualifications:
Required
· Numerical ability to verify the strength of the medication.
· Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
· Current CPR certification and First Aid.
· Knowledge of universal precautions.
· Ability to assist with various medication delivery systems, including bottles, blister cards, and other techniques as they integrate into the medication pass.
· Ability to identify and verify on the medical record the correct patient, time, dose, route, dosage form, and drug as written on the MAR or physician order and the pharmacy printed label.
· Be aware of therapeutic effects and side effects. Watch for signs of unintended drug response, intolerance, idiosyncrasy, and/or allergy. Use reference material available, including the house pharmacy hotline.
· Ability to assist with medications within one hour either way of the prescribed time unless there are specific directions otherwise.
· Ability to use other diagnostic tools to take vital signs if directed by the physician on the MAR.
· Ability to use a glucometer, thermometer, blood pressure cuff, and oxygen concentrator or liquid oxygen.
· Ability to count and take responsibility for narcotics locked in the narcotic drawer. Log out C2 and C3 meds from the narcotic ledger at the time of administration assistance.
· Ability to relate positively, effectively, and appropriately with residents, families, visitors, and other community personnel.
· Written skills required to document resident incidents and notify appropriate authorities.
· Motor coordination and manual dexterity to sort and store medications in the medication cart.
· Ability to work as a team member.
· Possess a particular interest and positive attitude about working with geriatric residents.
Preferred
· Previous experience in geriatrics
