What are the responsibilities and job description for the Biological Field Collector position at Carolina Biological?
OBJECTIVE / PURPOSE
The Collector I maintains and cares for living materials in designated lab area(s) and collects living organisms to be used in the study of biology and related fields.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS
- Prepares, picks, and packs materials according to customer orders.
- Completes timely fulfillment of customer orders with high quality specimens and equipment used in the teaching and study of biology and related fields.
- Collects biological specimens and living organisms from streams, ponds, fields, woods, etc.
- Participates in efforts to maintain the health and quality of living organisms during storage and shipping.
- Identifies and gains permission to collecting areas.
- Keeps accurate map records of collecting sites.
- Interacts with supervisor and with customers to obtain or relay information concerning prices, costs, product availability, product information, and assists in problem solving.
- Follows and maintains proper safety protocols for lab and collecting.
- Strives to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Plans own work after definite objective has been set by supervisor, referring unusual cases to supervisor. Works efficiently and independently on assigned tasks.
- Assists in planting, pollinating, and harvesting plant material such as corn, greenhouse plants, etc.
- Participates 2-3 weeks per year on-call in after-hours/weekend medicinal leech service.
- Assists all departments within the Live Biology Group based upon seasonal demands.
- Other duties may be assigned as directed by supervisor.
- Some evening, holiday, and weekend work will be required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Two-year degree in biology, or related field preferred, but not required.
Experience: 6-12 months experience working outdoors in a physically demanding field preferred.
Specialized Training/Skills: Other requirements:
- Must be able to swim.
- Must have a clean driving record.
- Must be able to identify plants and animals for collection.
- Must be able to identify hazardous plants and animals in the field for safety reasons.
- Must have good communication/interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects.
- Must be available for evening, weekend and holiday work (as needed).
