Pre-Press Technicians work in a team with other pre-press staff to perform a range of duties involved in preparing diverse types of documents and other materials for black and white or color printing, both digital and offset. The job requires the use of a variety of manual and electronic methods and equipment, including lithographic process cameras; electronic imagesetters; platemaking equipment; automatic film processors; film stripping; and digital file creation, processing, repair and manipulation using various software and hardware.
This level typically represents the most skilled level of prepress technician with advanced proficiency in operating and maintaining the most complex digital and manual prepress equipment and working with complex digital files. Incumbents at this level guide and mentor less experienced staff, as well as oversee and coordinate activities within the unit.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Responsible for organizing and coordinating the work of the pre-press unit in order to meet required deadlines.
- Independently sets up, adjusts and operates the most complex prepress equipment, digital and manual.
- Handles the most difficult prepress jobs, including performing preflight work on complex digital files.
- Creates, manipulates and imposes files going to JB3 for direct digital output.
- Produces digital color separations and performs digital color correction and color retouching.
- Diagnoses, resolves and documents technical problems (e.g. problems relating to text, graphics and images, to PostScript system and software errors, RIP messages, and to production issues in Microsoft Word files, etc.).
- Troubleshoots and resolves equipment problems and ensures completion of routine maintenance and minor repairs.
- Maintains and retrieves back-up files of all electronic and proof documents.
- Guides and trains more junior staff.
- Ensures that work area meets safety standards.
