Job Summary
Under the direction of the Mechanical Supervisor, Repairman Lead will inspect, evaluate, maintain, and repair/overhaul any company owned or leased railroad rolling stock and perform all other duties required to keep said stock in proper and safe operating condition. In addition, this position will also perform inspections and preventative maintenance to all rail tracks falling under the Western Railroad Company yard limits. The position is responsible for the proper documentation of car and rail maintenance in accordance with all Federal and State agencies.
Job Responsibilities
- Abide by Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines.
- Oversee train movements and any employees connected with that movement while inside shop facility. This position while under the (FRA mandated Railway Worker in charge position) is responsible for ensuring the safety of individuals who are working on, or who have the potential to obstruct, the railroad right of way.
- Maintains locomotives; inspects machinery, orders parts, coordinates with contractors, oversees and participates in mechanical and electrical repairs.
- Assists in interpreting new FRA regulations and in developing operating or mechanical rules.
- Assists Mechanical Supervisor in planning daily and weekly work plans regarding the scheduling of trains and maintenance work.
- Responsible for completing records associated with railroad trains and switching for inbound and outbound inspections.
- Ensures compliance with Federal Railroad Administration, Railroad Operating and Safety Rules, and other applicable Federal, State, County, or City rules, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
- Adhere to all CEMEX, OSHA and MSHA rules and regulations always and wear proper safety equipment while on plant grounds.
- Meet or exceed company safety standards.
- Maintain and repair the railcar frame and body.
- Inspect, evaluate, maintain, and repair / overhaul air brake systems, trucks, wheels, and bearings on railway rolling stock.
- Maintain and overhaul air operated equipment related to railway stock.
- Prepare and keep written records, supply inventory levels and job orders.
- Assist in switching and movement of all bad order and or repair needed rail stock.
- Perform such clean-up as is necessary to keep tools, equipment, and working areas clean, orderly, and safe.
- Perform any other work related to the maintenance and repair of rail cars as assigned by the supervisor.
- Attend to any painting that is essential to the identification, maintenance, and repair of railway stock.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of or the ability to learn and comprehend Federal Railroad Administrations, TXDOT (rail), as well as AAR (Association of American Railroads) policies and records.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices with the ability to plan, organize, coordinate, schedule, and execute railroad train and track repairs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Self-Motivated due to minimal staffing on the site.
- Computer skills are a plus.
Working Conditions
Occasionally works in high, precarious places in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme heat.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Physical Requirements
Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, which necessitates the wearing of a respirator, and vibration.
