MajorDuties

As an Microbiologist (Inspector) you will: Serve as a senior technical advisor and inspector by conducting evaluations and inspections of biological high containment laboratories that contain polioviruses and infectious biological agents. Monitor and evaluate the application process of U.S. facilities that fall under the Containment Certification Scheme of the WHO GAP. Evaluates and provides technical support with the inspection process of biological high containment facilities (BSL-2, 3, and 4) in the United States to determine that they follow international agreements and requirements for poliovirus containment to work in a safe and secure manner. Assess the compliance of federal, state, academic, and commercial facilities with international containment requirements governing the possession and use of polioviruses which are deemed to pose a severe risk to public health and safety. Lead in the development of operational and policy decisions and create critical documents such as facility inspection reports, enforcement actions, compliance letters, standard operating procedures (SOPs), guidance materials, and frequently asked questions.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications: Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. or Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level, which must include the following experience: providing technical guidance on the evaluations and inspections of biological containment laboratories that contain infectious biological agents and/or toxins. Documenting Experience: In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is creditable, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or an SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed.
