What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief of Legal Affairs position at Chainalysis?

The Legal team at Chainalysis advises both internal and external stakeholders on the forefront of cryptocurrency and its constantly evolving landscape.  Our job is to ensure the company continues its rapid growth by employing sound and efficient judgment to support operations around the company and influence a groundbreaking industry as it matures and becomes more widely adopted. 

The Chief of Legal Affairs knows what it’s like to litigate criminal cases related to emerging financial technologies and they’re an expert on regulations like the Bank Secrecy Act. They’re an advocate, educator, and evangelist for Chainalysis and the cryptocurrency market as a whole. We measure success by how well your counsel mitigates risks and enables growth.

  • Advised and supported customers and their prosecutorial workflow to ensure all stakeholders are educated on our products, capabilities, and how they interact with broader legal standards 
  • Worked closely with the senior leadership team on highly-sensitive matters to both mitigate risk for the business and promote the mission of our customers 
  • Led successful efforts to proactively develop and advocate Chainalysis’s industry-related policies, positions and strategies, forging constructive solutions and building industry coalitions as necessary to advance Chainalysis’s interests 
  • Influenced emerging strategic issues in legislative, regulatory and industry venues, which impact Chainalysis and the cryptocurrency industry through various means including participation in professional groups, industry associations and committees
  • Driven proactive federal advocacy campaigns that support Chainalysis objectives and support an excellent reputation among Washington, DC -based audiences 
  • Advocated for laws, regulations and policies favorable to the company and its business units and functions
  • Partnered with Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and other teams to establish a rapport and positive working relationship and provide pragmatic legal counsel regarding the achievement of business objectives
  • Served as the primary Legal advisor (and liaison with outside counsel) in the negotiation and settlement of business disputes or product liability matters to protect Chainlayis’s interests
  • Managed incoming inquiries on policy issues on behalf of Chainalysis and oversaw the development and dissemination of positions to advance Chainalysis’s objectives, including testimony, comments on regulations, and policy-related talking points and messages
  • Become an expert on applicable laws, regulations, and enforcement actions to identify emerging risks with the cryptocurrency community and alerted leadership to trends and risks

A background like this helps: 

  • Juris Doctorate degree and relevant legal experience related to financial crimes, cybercrimes, or other relevant area of practice (required) 
  • Demonstrated track record of working with and earning the trust and confidence of high-profile government leaders and serving as a trusted advisor/counselor
  • A strong record of planning and executing successful lobbying and government affairs initiatives to achieve enterprise-wide results; proven experience building partnerships and strategic alliances
  • Executive-level business acumen in the areas of the business operations, industry practices and emerging trends
  • Excellent ability to anticipate and mitigate risk
