What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Litigation Counsel position at Checkr?
We are looking for a motivated and curious, solutions-oriented junior litigator to join our high-performing and highly collaborative legal department. Our team advises stakeholders across the company to help Checkr reach its business and fairness goals. As Associate Litigation Counsel, you will be a member of the Litigation and Compliance practice group, which works closely with Checkr’s internal teams and external counsel to manage litigation matters and execute litigation strategies in state and federal courts. You will also partner with internal teams to identify potential product or process improvements.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in managing/executing all aspects of litigation and other matters (e.g., subpoenas, demands)
- Conduct factual investigation, case analysis, exposure analysis
- Review and revise pleadings and other litigation-related documents (e.g., declarations, motions, settlement agreements)
- Help prepare witnesses for deposition
- Attend depositions, hearings, and mediations
- Conduct legal research as needed
- Maintain case files and matter tracking systems
- Work with outside counsel to help formulate and execute nuanced litigation strategy
- Partner with team members and stakeholders to identify and implement product and process improvements
- Develop an understanding of the Fair Credit Reporting Act and similar state laws and how they apply to Checkr products and services
- Build cross-functional relationships to strengthen partnerships across the Company
- Identify and manage techniques to increase the quality and efficiency of legal services
What you bring:
- 3 years of substantive litigation experience
- JD degree and state bar admission in good standing
- Interest and enthusiasm towards new technologies, software, and services
- Knowledge of Fair Credit Reporting Act, employment laws, or criminal law is a plus, but not required
- Experience defending clients in highly regulated industries with consumer products and services is a plus, but not required
- You’re an educator – you can break down complicated laws and regulatory frameworks for non-lawyers
- You’re a skeptic – you’re passionate about understanding how things work, and the first answer you find is rarely enough
- You’re a clear communicator – you give practical advice in a fast-paced environment
- You’re flexible – you’re enthusiastic about learning and working on new subject matters

*The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with Colorado law, the base salary for this role if filled within Colorado is $109,820 - $148,580.
