SUBSTITUTE TEACHER PT - CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

Olive-Harvey College is currently looking for a part-time Substitute Teacher in the Child Development Center. A Substitute Teacher fills in for a regular, full-time Teacher or Assistant Teacher during their absence at a Child Development Center. Work assignments are on a daily basis with no guarantee of a minimum number of days or regular work week. A Substitute Teacher filling in for a Teacher leads classroom activities and maintains a nurturing classroom environment that offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum that meets the needs of the individual children and families in the classroom. Provides supervision to teacher assistants, aides and practicum students in the classroom. A Substitute Teacher filling in for an Assistant Teacher provides instructional and non-instructional support, assisting the Teacher in implementing a curriculum and performing activities to promote the development of children in the classroom. There are 3 levels of Substitute Teacher; each level is defined by the assignment (Teacher or Assistant Teacher) and the required minimum qualifications. Rate of pay is commensurate with assignment and educational requirements.
GENERAL DUTIES:
Provides a safe, clean, orderly, and healthy environment for children, instructing them on personal hygiene/hand washing, personal safety practices and related topics. Maintains constant supervision over classroom activities and children.
Reports accidents, injuries, and illnesses to parents and supervisors. Reports suspected cases of child abuse and neglect to authorities as a mandated reporter under state law.
Provides a nurturing, stimulating, non-punitive, and culturally sensitive environment that encourages language, self-expression, exploration, creativity, imaginative play, thinking skills, and the development of positive relationships.
Participates in Center staff meetings, sharing information on child development issues and other information of benefit to other teachers and assistants.
Attends professional development workshops as directed. Performs related duties as required.
Teacher – Level III
Works with the Director-Child Development Center to ensure classroom quality, address student needs, and oversee Assistant Teachers, Teacher Aides and Practicum Students working in the classroom.
Applies lesson plans and uses activities to teach a child centered, play-based curriculum that provides for a variety of developmentally appropriate activities to promote children’s development in the areas of language and literacy, cognition, social-emotional well-being, and physical health.
Prepares required paperwork, logs and records, and assessment documentation.
Teacher Assistant – Level II or I
Assists the Teacher in creating an environment and performing classroom activities that promotes children’s development in the areas of language and literacy; cognitive, social-emotional well-being, and physical health.
Assists in maintaining required paperwork, logs, and records of classroom activities.
Greets parents warmly and receives information about their child’s experience at the Center.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Level III
A Bachelor’s from an accredited college or university
Illinois Gateways ECE Credential Level 5
Knowledge of child development / early childhood development
Experience implementing an early childhood curriculum
1-2 years of experience teaching in an early childhood setting
Level II
An Associate’s degree in Child Development, Early Childhood, or equivalent from an accredited college with two years of experience working with preschool children; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Must obtain the Illinois Gateways ECE Credential Level 4
Level I
Sixty semester hours (or 90 quarter hours) of credit from an accredited college or university with six semester or nine quarter hours in courses related directly to child development, from birth to age six.
One year of child development work experience
Must obtain the Illinois Gateways ECE Credential Level 3
All Levels
Possess, demonstrate, and maintain a warm, supportive attitude towards children
A flexible schedule is required
Must be flexible in receiving assignments and adapting to changes in the program
Demonstrate good communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with children
and parents
Ability to work well within a culturally diverse environment
Ability to handle situations with tact and diplomacy
Ability to create or assist in creating developmentally appropriate lessons
Moderate proficiency of personal computers and applicable software
