Job Purpose:
To establish and maintain an educational program through appropriate programming for residential students who are out of school and through after school tutoring.
Essential Job Duties:
- Develop and implement remedial programs with students who are out of school, using the student’s classroom materials where available. This position will provide programming for up to 12 residents residing at the Emergency Shelter.
- Provide tutoring after school hours to assist students in performing schoolwork.
- Effectively document information and records required by agency. Respect client confidentiality.
- Develop resources to provide supplemental materials for teaching or tutoring.
- Work collaboratively with other educational and agency professionals.
- Attend all educational meetings
- Work collaboratively with all professionals in enrolling the youth in school, setting up as well as discontinuing school transportation, obtaining appropriate consent and release forms.
- Maintain weekly contact with school professionals.
- Contribute to children and youths’ learning, growth, and advancement.
Other Duties:
- Other duties as directed by supervisory team.
Complete necessary training.
Job Requirements
- Meet the minimum Nebraska state requirements for that of a Highly Qualified Paraprofessional- At least two years of post-secondary education and/or passing of a state test.
- Knowledge of tutoring or classroom education.
- Knowledge of childcare practices, developmental issues and group processes and practices, which are important to the position.
- Knowledge and demonstrated skills related to theory and practices for emotionally disturbed children preferred.
- Necessary stamina and temperament to work with children and youth (birth-18 years of age) who are experiencing crisis and/or emotional and/or behavior disorders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrate academic competence in the subject area(s) and build a curriculum if needed.
- Knowledge in child abuse and neglect, child development, behavior management, verbal and physical intervention preferred.
- Ability to collaborate cooperatively with team members.
- Patient and emotionally stable.
- Non-judgmental, positive attitude, flexibility, creativity, and dependability.
- Ability to provide appropriate care and supervision of children and youth at all times.
- Ability to interact with children and youth with sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics in the service population.
- Ability to take supervision and correction constructively.
Vehicle Requirements:
- Own transportation that meets agency vehicle inspection requirements.
- Valid driver’s license with no more than 3 points.
- Proof of insurance that meets agency requirements.
- Ability to complete a defensive driver training course.
