JOB SUMMARY
Provides patients presenting to an Emergency Department (ED) at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta with psychiatric assessment, child protection assessment and other psychosocial services. Ensures that high-quality, comprehensive psychiatric and medical social work services are provided to support healthcare and coordinate the psychosocial needs of patients and families.
EDUCATION
  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling from an accredited graduate school.
CERTIFICATION SUMMARY
  • Georgia or other state Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW); or
  • Georgia or other state Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

EXPERIENCE*
  • Three years of experience in postgraduate clinical or social work setting
  • Supervised clinical hours served in order to be licensed

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*
  • Experience in psychiatric or behavioral health
  • Experience in a medical inpatient/emergency department setting working with pediatric and adolescent patient populations
  • Experience with behavioral mental health (BMH) facilities and placement procedures

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*
  • Must be able to organize and manage multiple tasks
  • Must exhibit skills in coordination, delegation and team collaboration
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of age-appropriate assessment, treatment and practice
  • Must show accountability for leadership and actions in an autonomous role
  • Must be able to remain calm and manage verbal/physical responses in stressful situations
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Basic Windows Skill Assessment at 80% or higher rating within 30 days of employment
  • Must have knowledge of BMH facilities, 1013 placement process, etc.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*
  • Provides direct patient care in comprehensive psychiatric assessments and discharge planning for patients presenting in a behavioral and mental health crisis in the Emergency Department or other practice settings.
  • Collaborates with Emergency Department and other appropriate practice settings to provide support for determination of appropriate discharge disposition.
  • During psychiatric assessments, completes 1013’s to authorize transportation to an emergency receiving facility for patients requiring involuntary treatment
  • Manages BMH patient placement to appropriate BMH referred facilities.
  • Provides support to Care Coordination Assistants (CCA’s) through discharge/placement process.
  • Facilitate patient transfer to other care facilities or discharge through discharge planning and follow-ups.
  • Shares information and collaborates with Behavioral and Mental Health team members to ensure quality care coordination.
  • Connect patients and families to outpatient behavioral and mental health resources as appropriate.
  • Completes comprehensive psychosocial assessments to identify strengths and potential barriers across the continuum of care as relates to patient health and wellbeing.
  • Assists patients and families in coping with illness, trauma, hospitalization, and end of life based on principles of growth and development, family systems, and cultural considerations.
  • Assists families and healthcare team in making plans for discharge and ongoing medical care and treatment related to psychosocial needs.
  • Assists families in accessing resources to achieve and/or maintain stabilization and self-sufficiency.
  • Assesses patients and families for safety, abuse, and neglect concerns.
  • Serves as the mandated reporter for hospital campuses or assigned service area to Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services.
  • Provides information and acts as liaison for child protection, custody, supervision, visitation, and other safety needs on behalf of the family, interdisciplinary team, and community organizations.
  • Documents and maintains updated patient information pertaining to services provided.
  • Supports department goals by providing supervision to Master of Social Work students, assuming special projects and/or program planning assignments and participating in department/system committees.
SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*
Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
