Description The Director of Pharmacy Operations will be responsible to direct the central pharmacy operation to assure safe, efficient and timely provision of pharmaceutical care by utilizing technology and automation. The Director works closely with other hospital departments to evaluate, direct and modify pharmacy services. The Director of Operations is responsible for the pharmacy staff members, including subordinates, all operational supervisory staff and subordinates, staff pharmacists, residents, interns, technicians, volunteers and clerkship externship students. The Director of Pharmacy Operations provides executive leadership, direction and decision-making for all Pharmacy Operations and Services across MD, VA & DC. The Director of Pharmacy Operations ensures compliance with quality patient care standards (Federal and State regulations, Hospital and Divisional policies). In coordination with other professional disciplines, the Director of Pharmacy Operations promotes effective and functional pharmacy services in all settings. The Director of Operations directs the workflow of pharmacy staff in coordinating proper coverage of all pharmacy areas and functions, works with and assists pharmacy colleagues in completing assignments, and, other related duties. Responsible for designing and implementing pharmacy programs that promote quality care for inpatient and outpatient services. Scope of responsibilities include Pharmacy technology, automation, fiduciary, decentralized services [i.e. Satellites], and IV Admixture programs. Participates and initiates Performance Improvement projects.

Intermediate statistics and algebra.
Must be able to perform correlation statistics and complex algebraic equations and understand the concept of mathematical formulas.
Must have a working knowledge of MS Excel and MS Access.

- Supervise assigned pharmacists, technicians, and other support personnel in the performance of all duties. Allocate staff time to assigned activities. Coordinate hiring, orientation, training, performance evaluation process, scheduling and disciplinary action process for all direct reports. Ensure timely and accurate preparation and submission of attendance records for designated staff.
- 2. Deploy staff appropriately to meet business objectives.
- 3. Work with staff to provide growth opportunities.
- 4. Provide timely coaching and performance feedback to clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
- Develop and justify new pharmacy programs and services to improve patient care; develop and accomplish annual objectives for the area.
- Coordinate and integrate area services into the needs of the entire Department.
- Serves as Department Manager-on-Call.
- Represent the Department of Pharmacy Services (along with the Chief) on the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee (a.k.a. P&T Committee).
- Represent the Department at the Pharmacy-Nursing Committee.
- Identify programs and areas for cost reduction; specifically target drugs and therapeutic regimens that can be changed through pharmacy intervention to reduce cost; prepare methodology of program, obtain approval, and facilitate implementation of such programs.
- Contribute to develop and monitor the operating and capital budgets.
- Assist the Chief to evaluate performance reports and budget variances and develop action plans.
- Implement actions to facilitate meeting budget requirements.
- Assist the Chief to establish the strategic plan for department services, include short- and long-term objectives.
- Collect and analyze feedback on service/department effectiveness.
- With the Chief, incorporate findings into plans to modify programs/service delivery.
- Develop, interpret, and enforce hospital and Departmental policies and procedures; assure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements for pharmacy operations (e.g. FDA, DEA, Board of Pharmacy, DOH, TJC).
- Identify and coordinate quality control measures and quality assurance studies for assigned areas; use data to direct process changes and training.
- Effectively manage assigned areas: plan, organize, coordinate, direct, and control all pharmacy service program elements in those areas; set and maintain standards for a safe, efficiently organized work environment; establish and maintain a contemporary, exemplary pharmacy service to serve as a suitable environment for training of residents and students.
- Effectively communicate with all levels of the Department and hospital staff, as well as with patients.
- Schedule and conduct staff and team meetings.
- Act as a pharmacy liaison to support and contribute to the development of medication distribution systems that benefit the Hospital and the Department.
