What are the responsibilities and job description for the School-Age/Elementary Teacher- Early Childhood Education position at ChildRoots?
ChildRoots is a small family of locally- and woman-owned child care centers in Portland, Oregon. We see child as authentic, powerful individuals, and our mission is to guide their social and emotional development and to foster a sense of wonder about the world around them. Our awe-inspiring classrooms are child-focused and designed to provoke curiosity and encourage inquiry, but it’s our Teachers and support staff who make ChildRoots truly outstanding.
Because elementary schools are closed due to COVID-19, we’ve welcomed older children (up to age 12) into our program, and we’re looking for a full-time School-Age/Elementary Teacher to work at our Southeast Center, to start immediately.
This role requires applicants to be teacher-qualified, which means you’ve worked in a structured child care or school environment long enough and/or taken enough college-level courses in education-related subjects to meet these Office of Child Care requirements.
This School-Age/Elementary Teacher will work 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM, Monday - Friday, supporting a close-knit classroom of mostly kindergartners in completing their home classrooms' assignments and virtual learning expectations (Zoom meetings, synchronous learning, etc) throughout the day. As needed, they offer supplemental guidance and class leadership to support individual and group needs. Flexibility, patience, and creativity are essential for success in this role.
Many of our school-age students are ChildRoots graduates, and some have younger siblings still attending our schools, so the experience of working with these children is fun and familial. If you’re an elementary school employee not working due to COVID-19 or a child care professional looking for a new experience, we’re excited to connect with you.
There is potential for this role to evolve into a long-term position working with younger children after Emergency Child Care guidelines are lifted and school-age students return to their regular schools.
Currently, this School-Age Teacher is eligible for a $250.00 monthly incentive.
Since we opened our first school in 2007, we’ve continually adapted our compensation strategy, and we’ve learned that prospective and current employees alike value fair, predictable compensation. So, all ChildRoots School-Age Teachers start at $15.00 and are eligible for standardized annual raises and long-term commitment bonuses. Other centers and programs offer variable starting wages, but we’re committed to equal pay for equal work. When you receive a ChildRoots job offer, you won’t have to negotiate your wage or wonder how your offer compares to others’.
If you’re pursuing a new role in child care right now, you’re surely feeling anxious about safety. We are, too. So, during the ongoing pandemic, ChildRoots schools are operating in strict accordance with the Oregon Office of Child Care’s COVID-19 Health & Safety Guidelines, offering employees and students the safest workplace and learning environment we can.
In the classroom, children’s needs are our primary focus, but – now more than ever - we recognize how much help and encouragement our employees need, too. On a day-to-day basis, we try to truly see each other and to offer emotional support and stability whenever we can. We’re immensely grateful to our employees for not only showing up every day, but for bringing their best selves.
One of the ways we show up for our employees is by offering excellent health/vision insurance (we pay 70% of the cost), dental insurance (we pay 60%), life insurance (we pay 100%) and a 401(k) retirement savings plan with a generous company match. We also offer paid Holidays, a weeklong Winter Break, and opportunities for professional development throughout the year to help everyone meet the Office of Child Care’s continuing education requirements.
