How You Will Contribute: Reporting to the Director, Systems Design Architecture Engineering, as a Signal Processing Engineer, you will be part of the Signal Processing Team and will be involved in the design, modeling, and testing of current and next generation high speed optical modems. You will define algorithms, measurement/calibration procedures, and performance metrics and evaluate and optimize design alternatives with respect to relevant performance metrics. You will perform code functions in Matlab/C according to generally accepted coding standards. You will run simulations, verify functions, and automate system simulations, including documentation and archiving of results. You will write general specifications, test- and verification plans, providing detailed explanations and justifications for design trade-offs. You will test and verify algorithms in the lab, and use standard lab equipment to write test automation and lab equipment interface functions. In collaboration with a variety of internal teams, you will provide suggestions on existing designs and contribute ideas to improve design procedures. What Does Ciena Expect of You? The Must Haves: Graduate or Post-graduate degree in Physics or Engineering with focus on digital hardware, communication- and/or control systems. Strong engineering math skills - linear algebra, complex numbers, FFT/IFFTs, Laplace transform, Z-transform, transfer functions, time/frequency domain signals, sampling theorem, correlation, convolution, modulation formats, probability, random variables, and statistics. Knowledge of optical system building blocks such as DAC/ADC, amplifiers, analog and digital IIR/FIR filters, equalizers, feedback control loops, lasers, modulators, optical hybrids, and single mode fibers. Programming skills - Matlab and C experience. Design environment - Linux, Git (Bitbucket), Jira/Confluence, Microsoft Office. Comfortable in ESD protected lab environment; familiar with standard lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, network analyzers, power supplies, and spectrum analyzers. Proven debugging- and problem-solving skills.
