What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgery and Wellness Veterinary Technician position at Citizens for Animal Protection?
Animal Surgery and Wellness Technician:
Are you looking for a position where you can work to save animals’ lives? Does learning technical skills for surgery/wellness sound rewarding? If so, the Surgery and Wellness position at Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) might be the perfect role for you!
As a Surgery Technician you will work with shelter animals while also learning intermediate animal surgery protocols. As a Wellness Technician you will work with owned animals while also becoming proficient in vaccinations, animal handling, and wellness care. These positions are interchangeable and you may end up specializing in one or the other, but you will be cross-trained in both. You can advance through several levels of technician roles, receiving pay raises as you master each level. CAP is a nonprofit animal shelter going 50 years strong in Houston, and so you will be completing purpose-driven work, which is very fulfilling! The clinic at CAP handles all of the spay/neuter surgeries for shelter animals, additional surgeries for the health of the shelter animals, feral cat surgeries, and low-cost wellness vaccination services to the general public.
This position isn’t for everyone. It can be hard work, loud, smelly, and at times stressful. But if making a difference in the lives of shelter animals is something you are passionate about, AND if you like learning and moving up within an organization, it just might the most fulfilling job you’ve ever had.
Schedule and Activities:
A typical schedule for you at CAP would be 4 days at 10 hours per day, with at least one weekend day (our busiest times).
A typical day as Surgery Technician for you looks like: sterilizing machinery and equipment, prepping animals for surgery, performing as highly efficient and fast-paced team, and other animal care duties. The animals you are handling will most often be shelter animals who are getting ready to be adopted. You will also be helping on feral cat surgery days and eventually with surgeries for owned animals.
A typical day in Wellness for you looks like: Checking in patients, going over medical history in detail with clients, restraining pets that need shots, nail clippings, preparing pets for veterinarian exam, talking with clients about their pets, and other animal-related tasks. Our wellness facility is for preventative care, including vaccinations, and is not a full service vet (no boarding, major testing, or sick/injured animals).
If you are ready to work hard, provide exceptional customer service, and handle a variety of animals from cats and dogs, to rabbits, hamsters and other small mammals, this will be a great position for you! At CAP we work as a team and with great compassion for all animals and we expect the same from our new hires. The position also has opportunities for advancement. After training as a Level 1 Surgery tech, there are a two more levels and a Senior Tech level. You are eligible for a pay increase for each area that you master!
