Electrical Engineer I – Power Systems

Work Location: Greenwood Village, CO

Summary/Objective: 

Electrical Engineers work on design, development, and maintenance of electrical distribution and substation systems with varying levels of independence based on level and experience. They are involved throughout the life cycle of a project from conception to completion; the same engineers that develop project concepts, also lead or participate on project design, procurement support, construction support, commissioning, and extended operations and maintenance support.

 Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Possess and maintain knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and standards related to utility power distribution systems.
• Assist in designing sub-transmission systems, substations, switching stations, and commercial/industrial power distribution system.
• Develop concept design alternatives, engineering calculations, analysis, and engineering estimates for small-scale system improvement projects for substations and distribution systems.
• Create, update, and maintain GIS database for large-scale electrical distribution systems
• Perform site surveys for new utility service requests, develop concept design alternatives and present the alternatives to CLP management and the customer.
• Assist Lead Engineers with major capital upgrade projects:  site visits, engineering calculations, drawings, drafting, filed inspections, technical reports, etc.
• Analyze electrical fault events, power quality issues, system loading scenarios and assist CLP crew to implement corrective actions.
• Create system model for large-scale power system in ETAP (or similar software) and perform various power system analysis/studies.
• Develop bill of material and technical specifications for various electrical projects.
• Schedule and attend field walk-downs with customer, subcontractor, and construction personnel to understand and determine project requirements.
• Perform field take-offs/evaluations for estimate preparation.
• Participate in estimate review process with internal and external stakeholders.
• Assist construction personnel throughout the project life cycle in tracking and understanding the basis of cost estimate.
• Assist in the preparation and submission of change orders.
• Follow up at project end close any loops in the estimating process.
• Keep up to date with utility industry standards and codes.  Enforce and maintain all applicable standards and codes for our O&M, replacement/renewable and new installations.
• Gain and maintain intermediate knowledge of power system protection and relaying schemes for electrical distribution system.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university with emphasis in power systems.
• Zero to Two (0-2) years’ experience in the electrical utility industry.
• Medium voltage electrical substations and distribution system experience preferred.
• Familiar with power system analysis, distribution system modeling, and protective device coordination preferred.  
• Experienced in blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time/cost/labor estimates for projects and services preferred.
• Project scheduling in Microsoft Project is a plus.
• Experience with ETAP or similar software preferred.
• Career goal to pursue PE license.
• Must have excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills.
• Be a team player and be able to work with various partners from start to finish. 

Travel:

• Up to 20-30% out-of-the-area and overnight travel will be expected.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance:

• You must be U.S. citizen
• Military Base access is required for this position.
• Valid Driver’s License required 

Compensation & Benefits

• CLP offers an excellent benefits package including health, dental, life insurance, 401(k), profit sharing, Paid Time Off, and holidays.
• Salary: $57,000 - $75,000 based on experience
