What are the responsibilities and job description for the Landfill/Heavy Equipment Operator position at City of Albuquerque?
This position involves working in a hazardous work environment and is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
High school diploma or GED; and
Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation and heavy construction experience; and
To include one year of combined experience operating any of the following equipment (or equivalent):
- D9 Dozer
- 623 Scraper
- 140 Motorgrader
- 826/836 Compactor
One year (1) experience operating heavy equipment at an active landfill preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a valid City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
- Operational characteristics of a variety of heavy, power-driven equipment used in trash compacting and earth moving operations, including, but not limited to, D9 dozers, 623 scrapers, 826/836 compactors, 140 motor graders, large loaders and excavators, water wagons, etc.
- Maintenance requirements and safe operation of heavy, power-driven equipment
- Methods and materials used in earth moving activities
- Ability to read cut and fill drawings, interpret elevation stakes and verify slopes
- Experience constructing landfill cells and final caps
- Working knowledge of landfill operations
- Principles and techniques of fill sequencing and trash compaction
- Occupational hazards and standard construction safety practices specific to landfill operations
- Expert skill level operating the most heavy power-driven equipment used in trash compacting and earth moving operations, including, but not limited to, D9 dozers, 623 scrapers, 836 compactors, 140 motor graders, large loaders and excavators, water wagons, backhoes, dump trucks, hydroseeders, tarping machines, etc.
- Experience operating heavy equipment at a working landfill for at least one year
- Ability to perform a variety of skilled construction tasks, i.e. soil compaction, final grade
- Ability to clearly communicate with project engineers and discuss field logistics
- Read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, stakes and specifications
- Experience working under busy, constrained and hazardous conditions
- Able to work independently in the absence of supervision
- Understands and is able to follow most oral and written earth moving instructions
- Prepares accurate logs and records
- Effectively communicates with co-workers and supervisors
- Recognizes safety issues and/or unauthorized wastes, and reacts appropriately
- Able to perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods in unfavorable inclement conditions
- Performs the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, holidays and shift work as required
