What are the responsibilities and job description for the Groundskeeper/Landscaper position at City of Alma?
The City of Alma is committed to the beautification of its public spaces as part of a larger strategy to strengthen the local economy, improve quality of life, and build community pride. As a part of this effort, the city is seeking a landscaper, working under the direction of the city landscape technician, to assist with landscape development and maintenance.
The landscaper shall provide for the cleanliness and maintenance of Alma’s downtown area and maintained rights-of-way. An ideal applicant should have experience with planting bed maintenance, experience with or aptitude for operation of equipment (including a truck and trailer, mower, bucket truck, back hoe, and mini excavator), and a willingness to learn new information and techniques. Curiosity is encouraged and will be met with opportunities for training and professional development.
Must be able to work in all weather conditions and handle the physical demands of the job, including standing, bending, pulling, pushing, kneeling, and climbing as well as the ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds.
Duties:
- Care for flowers, shrubs, and trees in landscaped areas. Monitor for insects and diseases of ornamental plants. Perform appropriate routine maintenance for a variety of woody, perennial, and annual plants.
- Prepare landscape beds for planting. Plant stock in compliance with established industry standards.
- Hedging, mowing, leaf-blowing, string trimming, basic irrigation system maintenance, weeding, mulching, raking, sweeping, pruning, planting, and other related duties.
- Remove weeds, leaves, and debris from outdoor areas.
- Maintain walkways, parking lots, and other outdoor surfaces.
- Assist in seasonal installation and removal of holiday decorations.
- Other related work as assigned
Skills:
- Experience in landscape maintenance and garden care
- Familiarity with irrigation systems and their operation
- Ability to operate hand tools and power tools used in landscaping and maintenance
- Ability to safely drive a truck and trailer
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment
- Attention to detail to ensure a neat and well-maintained appearance of the grounds
- Interest or experience in native landscaping and ecological land care ethics
Schedule and compensation:
Starting pay is $15.30/hr., paid bi-weekly.
Full-time schedule is Monday-Friday, 8am to 5pm. An employee must be full-time to qualify for the complete benefits package, available after the introductory period:

Special full-time status is available for individuals who desire to work less than 40 hours per week, but more than 30 hours. Special full-time employees are eligible for health insurance, vision insurance, dental insurance, and participation in the pension plan. Vacation, holiday, sick leave, and bereavement leave shall accrue on a pro rata basis based upon the number of hours regularly scheduled.
