General Information
The City of Ames is conducting a recruitment to establish a Civil Service eligibility list for this classification. The list will be valid for up to one year from the date of certification by the Ames Civil Service Commission and may be used to fill one or more vacancies in this classification. In addition, City of Ames Civil Service employees who have previously held Civil Service status in this classification and are interested in voluntarily demoting or laterally transferring into the current vacancy must submit their application by the deadline.
Under the general supervision of the Police Records Supervisor, the Police Records Clerk maintains, compiles, retrieves and distributes official Police documents, statistical information and other records, and performs related work as required.

Regular scheduling for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.
Compensation
This position has a salary structure governed by a bargaining unit agreement with the Public, Professional, and Maintenance Employees (PPME). Starting salary for this position is currently $23.04/hour or $47,932 annually. Increases are provided in steps at 19 months and 37 months of employment, with potential increases every July 1, based on the bargaining unit agreement or contract.

Examples of Essential Job Functions: Maintains official law enforcement information, documents, and other records; enters data and information into computerized databases using law enforcement specific software; ensures the information is coded properly for NIBR submission to the State; contacts officers when something is needed; assists in development and modification of applicable computerized programs; performs informational searches using computerized databases. Qualifications
Education and Experience: High school diploma, HiSet, or G.E.D.; and two years of diversified office clerical experience, including direct public contact, data entry and using electronic record keeping systems; preferably some experience in clerical public safety or law enforcement work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and Certificates: Must obtain IOWA/NCIC certification within six months of appointment and re-certify as required.
Residency Requirement:
The PPME bargaining unit agreement requires employees under this contract to reside within an area bordered by State Highway 65 on the east, County Road R-27 north of Boone and Des Moines River south of Highway 30 on the west, Story County line on the north, and Polk County Road F-22 on the south. Communities intersected by the borderlines shall be within the area.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of business English, spelling and composition; knowledge of modern office procedures and equipment. Knowledge and efficient use of Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Ability to rapidly and accurately respond to requests for information in a courteous and diplomatic manner, and to exercise discretion by maintaining confidentiality in dispensing that information; ability to follow oral and written instructions and retain significant technical knowledge; ability to efficiently and accurately enter data into, and retrieve information from, a computer data system and electronic documents; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and the general public; ability to deal effectively with upset or irate customers; ability to listen to, and communicate (both written and oral) effectively and professionally with customers, other City employees, and contractors; ability to operate a computer and other standard office equipment.
Supplemental Information
Required Physical Activities: Finger dexterity, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and standing.
Physical Characteristics of Work: Sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
Vision Requirements: The minimum for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer and/or extensive reading.
Environmental Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions such as in typical office or administrative work.
Equipment Essential to the Job: Computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and scanner; copy machine, fax machine, file storage systems, and a variety of written materials including forms, reference materials and books. A variety of common office equipment such as pens/pencils, file folders and labels, etc.
Selection Process:
The selection process consists of an evaluation of application information, education, experience and supplemental questions; phone interview; hiring assessment; on-site interview, which will include a manager meeting and basics testing; and extensive background investigation (including criminal history, personal reference and employment verification, and sex offender registry check), and fingerprinting.
