The City of Bastrop Fire Department is looking for a dedicated individual who takes pride in helping others within our community to fill the position of full-time Firefighter. The Fire Department is a combination department responsible for providing fire protection services to over 10,000 residents within the 9 square miles of the City limits. The Department has 2 fire stations that run an average of 1,200 calls annually. Bastrop Fire Department promotes fire prevention and education, responds to fire, medical and rescue calls. The Department's current fleet includes a 100 foot Platform Quint and Engine. City of Bastrop Firefighters are responsible for performing public safety work involving protection of life and property by engaging in firefighting and public safety skills. In addition, they may engage in public education, station and equipment maintenance. Firefighters work in an outdoor environment subject to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and intermittent exposure to other hostile environments, confined spaces, and high noise intensity. They perform technical work in firefighting, apparatus operations, rescue, emergency medical services and fire training activities. Firefighters also perform work on an assigned basis under the direction of the Fire Chief or their designee.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:
  • In the absence of an officer, assume command and make critical decisions pertaining to life safety;
  • Provide firefighting, rescue, and basic life support at emergency scenes;
  • Participate in training classes, skills practice, and drills to enhance job-related skills and abilities;
  • Read internal e-mails, memos, guidelines, policies, and procedures to keep apprised of new developments in departmental operations and procedures;
  • Participate in physical fitness activities to maintain physical conditioning;
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and street conditions in order to operate apparatus safely and expeditiously;
  • Study, learn, and maintain knowledge of streets, block numbers, landmarks, and other natural/man-made barriers in order to know the most direct and expeditious routes to an incident;
  • Safeguard self and others at all times;
  • Respond quickly to unforeseen circumstances as they arise;
  • Ensure the scene is free of any remaining hazards, equipment, or trash associated with the emergency response;
  • Operate within the Incident Management System and departmental operating procedures;
  • Minimize distress and suffering, including giving direct medical assistance; perform triage and stabilize patients by following established emergency medical treatment protocols;
  • Review, complete, file, distribute, forward, and record information in logs, forms, reports, and systems, as assigned;
  • Perform at the operations-level, or technician-level when trained and certified, at technical rescue operations;
  • Perform at the operations-level at hazardous materials operations;
  • Engage in activities which have a positive impact on the Department’s image within the community including public education, assistance, and other related initiatives;
  • Participate as a Fire Department representative at community events, as assigned;
  • Test hydrants for operational use, provide seasonal maintenance, and properly document results;
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain personal gear and equipment to ensure proper and safe operation;
  • Perform general cleaning, maintenance, and upkeep of Department property;
  • Clean and perform maintenance checks and servicing on all apparatus and equipment, making minor repairs, and referring repair needs to the appropriate personnel;
  • Assist with returning equipment and apparatus to service;
  • Assist in training other personnel on assigned equipment operation, usage, care, and maintenance;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Listed below are the minimum license, certification, and credentialing requirements for applicants to be eligible to apply for the Firefighter position. All eligible candidates selected shall serve a minimum of six (6) months probationary period from the date of promotion or hire.

Education Requirement:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; must be eighteen (18) years of age.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Class B Texas driver’s license or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) certification as a Basic Structural Firefighter or higher.
  • Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or higher.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 or the ability to obtain within 6 (six) months of employment.
  • Complete a Texas Commission of Fire Protection Wildland Basic certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
  • Have not been convicted of any felonies.
  • Have not been convicted of any Class A and B misdemeanors in the previous 7 years.
  • Complete hiring process as outlined.
  • Background investigation to include employment history, criminal history, driving record and references.

  • Basic principles of Incident Command System;
  • Local geography including streets and location of hydrants and major fire hazards;
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
RECRUITMENT

The following timeline has been developed for the application/hiring process:
IMPORTANT DATES
  • June 27, 2023: Application Process Opens
  • August 11, 2023: Q & A Session from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
    • "Come and Go" event for questions. Event will be held at Fire Station #1 located at 802 Chestnut St., Bastrop, Texas 78602.
  • August 25, 2023: Application Process Closes at 5:00 p.m.
  • September 8, 2023: Written Exam at 8:00 a.m.
    • Written Exam will be conducted at Fire Station #2 located at 120 Corporate Drive, Bastrop, Texas 78602
    • Physical Ability Test following the written exam. Bring appropriate attire.
  • September 15, 2023: Panel Interview (Times to be determined)
  • October 2, 2023: Projected Start Date

Firefighter Selection Process:
The selection process begins with an application period. All applications will be reviewed at time of submission for completeness and minimum requirements. Selected candidates will be notified to take the written exam on August 18, 2023 at 8:00 a.m. Exams will be graded immediately following.

Candidates that pass the written exam will return for the physical ability test. Those with the top combined scores will be scheduled to begin the background process. Candidates who successfully pass the background process will be invited to a panel interview. Top candidates will then proceed to the Chief’s interview. Depending on the number of open entry-level positions, a conditional offer of employment will be extended to the top candidate.
