What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Technician I position at City of Battle Creek (MI)?
Performs intermediate semiskilled work in the development, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of recreational programs (Water Park or Kidventure Camp and misc. programs), activities and events. Performs related work as apparent or assigned under the limited supervision of the Recreation Director. Leadership provided to volunteers and temporary employees.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone. Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and working near moving mechanical parts; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
- Assists in the research, development and administration of recreational programs for targeted activities, which will include the Water Park or Kidventure Camp and miscellaneous programs ran by Recreation Services. Implements programs such as enrichment, sports, wellness, special events, and other activities as directed.
- Handles daily tasks and problems relating to all aspects of targeted program and implementation with various user’s groups; makes presentations and performs other activities necessary to encourage participation in municipal recreational programs.
- Helps coordinate the work activities of temporary employees assigned to the department. Provides support to the customer service desk as needed; provides facilities/recreation center supervisory support as needed. Assists in developing schedules, rosters, ordering jerseys and other supplies, coordinating team photos, and organizing volunteer coaches.
- Utilizes media resources in order to promote the Recreation Department and its programs; prepares and coordinates communications for the supervisor, media, and members of the community, including through the department website and social media pages.
- Provides input to the development of the Recreation Master Plan.
- Bachelor's degree with coursework in business or public administration, parks and recreation administration, or related field.
- 1-3 years experience providing recreational services.
- Lifeguard certification and lifeguard instructor certification preferred (for Water Park operation only).
- Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.
