The Crime Scene Technician is responsible for collecting and processing evidence related to crimes. The position is responsible for collecting, processing, safeguarding, and presenting evidence, preparing reports, and administrative duties. The position will work under general supervision to perform work as outlined; develop work methods and sequences.  This position provides 24 hour service to the community by rotating schedules, which includes working weekends, holidays, and overtime when required by operational necessity.
  • Collects evidence at crime scenes or related areas using technical processes to find, collect, store, catalog, and transport.
  • Process, classify, and safeguards evidence using laboratory or other physical process to determine characteristics or other information concerning evidence.
  • Perform administrative functions such as recording statistical information, compiling reports, performing specialized studies, coordinating with other agencies or the public, and maintaining logs and forms.
  • Prepares evidence information for use, presents to others, and testifies about evidence in court.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED:

  1. Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or Criminal Justice or a related field. 
  2. Two years of experience in criminology, forensic science, law enforcement or a related field. 
  3. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days).

OR                                                                      

  1. An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES   

Considerable knowledge of standard techniques of criminal identification and fingerprint classification methods, practices, records and equipment.  Knowledge of the principles and techniques of photography and photographic processing methods and equipment; criminal identification methods and procedures; skill in the use and care of materials and equipment employed in police identification work.  Ability to maintain cross-indexed filing systems and to classify documentary materials for filing purposes; to maintain cooperative as effective public relations; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, City officials, cooperating agency personnel, and the general public.

Attendance is an essential function of this position.  The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work more than 40 hours a week.  This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations.   These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job.   In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
