The Beaverton City Library is looking for a Spanish speaking Librarian who’s passionate about working with young children and excited to provide Spanish language storytimes at the Main Library. You’ll also order materials for our Spanish and World Languages collections and help library patrons with their customer service needs.

A Week in the Life of a Bilingual Librarian:
This position is new to BCL but a week in the position will look something like this:
 
  • Spend about 7 hours a week helping customers of all ages at our lively children’s, teen, and adult reference desks. You will field a wide variety of questions including requests for reading recommendations, computer help, and research assistance. 
  • Plan and present two Spanish-language storytimes.
  • Assist Spanish speakers with their library questions and needs, both in person and on the phone.
  • Read book reviews and make purchasing decisions for our World Languages collections. 
  • Create Spanish language posts for our Facebook and Instagram accounts.
This is a part-time, non-exempt, SEIU-classified position. This position may include evening and weekend hours. There is one vacancy.
  • Select materials for our World Languages & ESL collections for youth and adults at both locations and monitor the collections budget.
  • Provide a weekly storytimes in Spanish at the Main Library.
  • Staff the customer service points at the Main Library.
  • Support Spanish speaking patrons though our Spanish phone line, social media posts, and document translation.
  • Exhibit leadership to staff. Lead, collaborate and actively participate on projects, committees, teams and task forces. Provide training to staff on these activities.
  • Create a workplace that promotes the organizational values of workplace diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Assist in creating a positive and supportive work environment with a culture of teamwork and communication.
  • Actively promote an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.
  • Perform duties outlined in the Librarian classification or other duties as assigned.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL BE:

  • Passionate about storytime. Experienced with storytimes and excited about all aspects of early literacy.
  • A forward-thinker. Innovative and interested in bold actions and trying new ideas. 
  • Customer service oriented. Is excited to help patrons and library staff and is welcoming and approachable. 
  • Responsive to our patron’s evolving needs and wants. Will strive to create a dynamic World Languages collection that reflects our diverse community.
  • Dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the library. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association accredited school with some professional library experience; or an equivalent combination of education and library experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position. Currently enrolled MLIS students that will graduate by June 2023 are welcome to apply.
  • Demonstrated success in working with Latinx communities. This may be demonstrated by knowledge of the traditions, values, and customs of the community being served and the ability to identify specific examples of experience working with and building trust with individuals and families who identify with this community. Requires speaking, writing, and reading fluently in both English and Spanish.
  • One year of experience working in a library setting.
  • Ability to pass a written test as part of the selection process.
  • Ability to pass a reference check, background check and drug screen.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in collections for adults and/or youth.
  • Previous public library experience.
  • Experience providing storytimes.
  • Experience presenting on projects and/or library trends with a wider library audience. 
  • Intermediate skill in Microsoft Excel.

Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.

The city pays the full retirement contribution to PERS; provides employees with an opportunity to participate in a deferred compensation retirement plan; makes available a public service loan forgiveness program and tuition reimbursement program; and offers excellent health, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. In addition to the hourly wage, bilingual pay (4% above the base) may be offered, contingent on the candidate passing a proficiency test provided by the city.
