Researches legal and policy issues and provides resources, information, advice, and recommendations. Drafts and presents ordinances, resolutions, contracts, press announcements and background information, and other documents. Provides support to Council standing committees and organizes and directs work of task forces, as assigned. Assists in rendering legal advice to, or conducting litigation on behalf of, the Council. Assists in the preparation and distribution of the weekly legislative packet. Acts as a liaison between Council members, the City administration, and boards and commissions on legal and policy issues relating to City business. Receives calls from citizens and appropriately responds, working with City staff to resolve complaints or concerns, if necessary. Networks with other communities to share information about laws, regulations, policies, and practices. Processes claims and ensures the efficient operation for the Council Office. Takes all reasonable steps to maintain a safe work environment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
J.D. degree or equivalent knowledge. Licensed attorney in State of Indiana required. Advanced degree in public affairs or equivalent preferred. Minimum of three years’ of experience as an attorney and/or government/public affairs.
TRAINING/SKILLS
Knowledge of local, state and federal laws, regulations, and rules. Ability to perform research, synthesize information, and render conclusions regarding complex matters of law and public policy. Ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and concise fashion in both written and oral form. Significant knowledge of municipal operations and thorough knowledge of legislative process. Ability to simultaneously plan and manage competing demands and assignments on a daily basis.
Additional Information
Salary: $49,686.95 - $69,561.51
Hours: 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday; other times, as necessary (including some evening meetings).
