SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor-Sports:

Provide communication, leadership, and assistance for Bloomington’s adult sports leagues, field and facility rentals, and outdoor ice rinks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist Recreation Supervisor in providing leadership, work direction, schedules, communication, and onsite supervision to part-time and contractual staff including the Assistant Coordinators, Building Attendants, Athletic League Officials, Leads, and other positions relevant to sports and ice rink programming.
  • Assist Recreation Supervisor with adult sports league management, including registrations, scores, standings, schedules, tournaments, league communications, and coordination of contracted officials.
  • Assist the Recreation Supervisor with athletic field and facility management and scheduling.
  • Assist the Recreation Supervisor with warming house management, including registrations, marketing, staff supervision, schedules, public outreach, communications, and coordination of employees and programs
  • Responsible for communication with program participants regarding program updates, facility conditions, and weather-related issues.
  • Assist Recreation Supervisor with hiring of part-time staff.
  • Assist with planning of staff trainings and meetings.
  • Complete part-time staff performance evaluations every 6 months or end of employment.
  • Demonstrate creativity and initiative to develop and implement new programs, events, and activities.
  • Document and inform supervisor of on-site program concerns including scheduling conflicts, maintenance needs, and all other pertinent program related issues.
  • Inventory supplies and equipment for sports programs. Notify supervisor when additional supplies are needed. Purchase additional supplies as directed.
  • Complete assigned program reports, surveys, and evaluations.
  • Provide Recreation Supervisor with documented feedback from participants regarding programs, facilities, and staff.
  • Ensure program compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Minnesota Human Rights Act.
  • Assist in scheduling and coordination of athletic facilities.
  • Serve as a substitute Lead Staff, Assistant Coordinator, or Building Attendant as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with supervisor, staff, program participants, and other professional connections.
  • Other duties as apparent or assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Ability to communicate ideas and explanations clearly in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with the public in a friendly, tactful manner.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and skills to provide work direction and leadership for part-time and contractual staff.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to use common Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel and Outlook, as well as recreation software programs.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using units of American money, weight and distance.  
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram from. 
  • Ability to type routine reports and correspondence, that conform to prescribed style and format.  
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply proper English, spelling, and punctuation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree and three (3) years of study in a post-secondary curriculum.
  • Experience working in municipal recreation or athletic programming.
  • Experience participating in, planning and evaluating recreational sports programs.
  • Knowledge of athletic fields, athletic facilities, ice rink facilities, facility maintenance requirements, and procedures.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and techniques.
  • CPR/First Aid certified or the ability to obtain certification prior to the start of employment.

      Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Parks, Leisure Services (or direct equivalent degree) or a bachelor’s degree in Education plus 2 years of experience in municipal recreation.
  • Adult athletic programming, athletic facility, and staff scheduling experience.
  • Experience working with Recreation Software programs and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Knowledge of athletic facilities maintenance requirements and procedures.
  • Ability to speak a second language, in addition to English, that has a recognized presence in the community. (Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, etc.)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and move about the office; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment of this job frequently includes working in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
