Hiring Range: $20.85 - $26.28 Job Description Summary: Under general supervision, to provide library patrons with a high level of customer service and assistance in fulfilling information and youth programming needs, and to work with electronic access to the Internet, library catalog, and online databases using established procedures, and to perform related duties as required. The Youth Services Specialist is charged with modeling quality customer service behaviors which align with the Library customer service model and City Values. The specialist will be attentive, adaptable, and patron-facing. Job Description: DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Creates a pleasant, customer friendly atmosphere for patrons at the library through: Positive interactions with patrons, maintaining fair and equitable application of library policies and procedures. Responding to and resolving customer issues that may include library policy interpretation and library space use Keeping informed of patron needs and requests regarding library collections and services Communicating professionally with all age-level persons, either in person, on the telephone, or via email to conduct library business as necessary. 2. Maintains an understanding of the needs of youth from several perspectives including cognitive development, emotional and social development, and educational development. 3. Instructs patrons in library procedures and use of library materials, including the library catalog, databases and downloadable materials (eBooks, streaming audio and video, etc.) while maintaining a general knowledge of resources available in the Children's, Teens', and the larger library collection. 4. Under the direction of the Youth Services Manager, plans, schedules, promotes, and administers a variety of programs for children, including: contacting, interviewing and coordinating necessary volunteers, performers and employees; designing and producing necessary materials; purchasing and organizing supplies; scheduling the meeting space; and assisting other Library staff with graphics and the promotion of activities. Provides back-up for programs by preparing the space, introducing performers or leading the program. Coordinates with local schools to provide school tours and visits to local schools to promote library programs and services. Assists with the implementation and administration of the annual Summer Reading Program. 5. Creates and provides simple early literacy activities for children and their caregivers. 6. Assists with collection maintenance such as weeding, making purchasing suggestions and day-to-day upkeep. 7. Compiles for patrons reading lists of recommended materials on issues relating to children and types of books that are frequently requested. 8. Creates displays of topical interest, including specialized collections of books and materials to encourage reading and provide information in those areas. 9. Performs clerical duties including: maintenance of paper and electronic files; processes materials, information, accounts, or records using established Library procedures. 10. Operates a computer using appropriate software for duties assigned. 11. Interacts with the public and Library staff to exchange routine information and acts as a resource for other staff in their interactions with youth. 12. Works with material handlers, volunteers, substitutes, and work-study students, and provides them with on-the-job training as needed. 13. Operates equipment including photocopier and scanner, computer and barcode printers, RFID, self-check machines, and audio/visual equipment. 14. Other: Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city. Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property. Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies. Generally, duties and responsibilities are listed from most to least critical or time consuming. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of library experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Prior work experience must demonstrate an ability to work independently and show some increase in responsibilities. Demonstrated ability to work in a highly energetic and dynamic setting; ability and desire to learn new resources quickly. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills. Interest, desire and ability to communicate courteously and effectively with and to provide remarkable service to others, either in person, by telephone or e-mail. Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to multi-task. Familiarity with personal computers and appropriate software. Ability to handle complex financial transactions and to use a credit card machine and cash register. Willingness and flexibility to work a schedule that will include evenings and weekends. Ability to lift 40 lbs. Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications: Experience with library subscription databases and Innovative Interfaces, Inc. automated library system. Experience with Prospector or similar InnReach borrowing system. Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English, preferably Spanish. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical and Mental Effort: Partially sedentary and partially standing physical work in an indoor setting, requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 25-30 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, and walking. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operation computer equipment and other office equipment. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to move throughout the work environment and work in an office setting. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. Work Environment: Works primarily in an indoor office environment. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Machine and equipment used in work include but are not limited to the following: Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, calculators, DVD player, video projector, telephone, copy machines, barcode and computer printers, eBook readers, digital cameras, and various audio-visual equipment.
