Position Title: Sanitation Route Driver
Department: Public Works
Immediate Supervisor: Sanitation Supervisor
Position Summary
Performs skilled sanitation work pertaining to the pickup of waste, recycled goods, yard waste, and general vehicle maintenance; an employee in this class is responsible for driving large sanitation vehicles, and must be able to lift heavy items in a safe and quick manner. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed through periodic observation and completed routes.
Grade: 10
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Hours: Full-time, early morning start times are required
Weekends, special events, and emergencies as required
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties, responsibilities and expectations are not necessarily limited to the following, and are not enumerated in any particular order or priority. At any particular time the frequency or duration with which one or more of the following specific duties is performed may vary widely.
- Safely drives, cleans and maintains large sanitation truck(s); washes the vehicle as needed; maintains sufficient fuel in the vehicle; schedules and coordinates maintenance; drives vehicle to the mechanic and retrieves vehicle form mechanic Driver is responsible for the completion of his/her assigned collection route and for safe operation of the collection vehicle
- Driver must perform all required pre and post trip inspections and participate in all required safety training and adhere to all safe driving and operation procedure rules
- Removes curbside sanitation waste, recycled goods, yard waste bags of leaves, grass, limbs, and bundles of limbs, and some bulk items from Brentwood residents, businesses and organizations; requires manual lifting of heavy trash cans and refuse materials – must be able to lift 50 pounds safely
- Performs recycling and yard waste activities
- Resident relations and satisfaction are a primary responsibility of this job
- May be assigned as the Crew Leader overseeing the activities of one or more laborers who are assigned to remove refuse and recycling
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Good knowledge of sanitation truck, its operation, and hydraulic compaction system.
- Skill in the safe and efficient operation of motorized equipment in difficult conditions
- Able to operate pickup truck with dump bed
- Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs. in a repetitive manner,
- Ability to follow route directions
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish effective working relations with fellow employees
Minimum Requirements – Education, Certification, and Experience
- Graduation from a general or technical high school, or GED
- Minimum of one year experience with residential trash hauling and pickup, preferably with manual can lifting
- Must have a valid Class ‘B’ CDL with an air break endorsement in Missouri
- Must be able to be insured through the City’s insurance carrier
- Driver must be able to work the required hours to complete the collection route which may exceed 8 hours a day and/or 40 hours per week
Working Conditions
- Works in various weather conditions from normal to extreme
- Adverse conditions do not excuse completion of assigned route
