The City of Commerce City is seeking a highly motivated, attention-to-detail, Staff Assistant to support our City Manager's Office. The Staff Assistant will work under the direction of the Assistant to the City Manager to provide professional-level administrative, program, and technical support; act as confidential liaison, develop communication for internal and external constituents, promotes community and agency relations, and conduct research.

This position supports the City Manager's Office by providing logical and sound discretion, judgment, and responsive service which are vital to maintaining the needs of our community. The perfect person for this position thrives on making work-life organized and streamlined for public officials and City leadership while navigating their jam-packed calendars and agendas. This position is about knowing who to talk to, where to find critical information, and how best to share key details - timeliness and accuracy are essential to success in this role,  It’s as simple as this: Building a stronger community starts with a leadership team that is prepared, organized, and well-informed.  
 
This dynamic portfolio requires someone who excels in leading with professionalism and tact while ensuring projects are coordinated and communicated with a wide variety of stakeholders and community partners.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Knowledge of:

  • Principles of public, community, and government relations. 

  • The ability to be politically astute while remaining apolitical

  • Communication and interpersonal techniques.

  • Principles and practices of public administration.

  • Research and problem-solving methods and techniques. 

  • Project management methods and techniques.

  • Federal, state, regional, and local government operations.

  • Organization and functions of City departments and agencies. 

  • Business English composition and grammar.

  • Basic math.

  • Standard office equipment, including computer systems and software programs.  Contemporary office methods and procedures.


Skill to:

  • Communicate politically sensitive information effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Coordinate schedules for elected officials.

  • Collect, organize, and summarize data.

  • Analyze issues and problems from multiple perspectives.

  • Identify and resolve citizen complaints.

  • Research community issues and concerns.

  • Prepare and maintain reports, records, and confidential information.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships exercising considerable tact and diplomacy with public officials, private organizations, City employees, and the public.

  • Operate office equipment.


Ability to:

  • Consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.

  • Develop timelines and implement actions once goals have been determined and agreed upon.

  • Work independently and effectively with City staff.

  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion at all times.

  • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

  • Use tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex, and confidential issues and situations.

  • Apply creative problem-solving to the analysis of established organizational practices and methods.

  • Apply Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, and City policies and procedures for the respective duties of the position.

  • Make effective decisions with minimal supervision.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals and groups who come from diverse backgrounds and represent members of the public, coworkers, and/or vendors.




Education, Experience, and Formal Training


Seven (7) years of relevant, progressively responsible experience related to the positionMunicipal government experience preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office365 required. An equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Must have a valid driver’s license.


Possession of an applicable bachelor’s degree may substitute for four (4) years of experience.

Possession of an applicable associate degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience.



Hiring salary is dependent upon experience. 
The hiring range is $59,792 - $74,740 / annually
