DESCRIPTION OF WORK

General Statement of Duties: Under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director, participates in the maintenance, care and preparation of City parks, trails and the CommunityCenter. Assures facilities are maintained in a safe condition for public use and reflect a well maintained appearance. Assists the Public Works department in maintenance of other city property, cemetery, streets and/or facilities.

Supervision Received: Works under the general and administrative supervision of the Parks andRecreation Director.

Supervision Exercised: None

TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED

  • Completes tasks associated with the maintenance and care of City parks including but not limited to; mowing and edging lawns, trimming trees and shrubs; cleaning, removing trash, controlling weeds, fertilizing lawns and sidewalk/parking lot snow removal.
  • Performs planting, pruning and deer protection for tree seedlings
  • Maintains recreational facilities including but not limited to hockey/skating rinks, ball fields, tennis courts, picnic shelters, playgrounds, disc golf course, community garden and irrigation systems.
  • Occasionally marks and drags ball fields not located in Crosslake (Ideal/Mission).
  • Assures that routine maintenance is performed on a wide variety of equipment. Paints and repairs park equipment and facilities as needed.
  • Maintenance of Community Center, warming house, #103 Park, garages, including but not limited to; cleaning bathrooms, kitchens, removing trash, vacuuming carpet, sweeping and or mopping, setting up meeting rooms, painting, washing windows, adding salt and changing air filters, planning custodial and maintenance schedule, responding to problems during work & non-work hours.
  • Opening and closing of all recreational facilities on occasion including arming and disarming security system, answering phones and writing receipts.
  • Orders supplies and performs repairs within buildings such as unclogging drains, toilets, and other essential functions to assure proper performance of facilities.
  • Operates a variety of power tools and equipment including but not limited to; blowers, chain saws, weed-whip, and a wide variety of hand tools.
  • Monitors safety conditions (Ice, Trails Floor’s); performs safety checks, ie: playground, fire extinguishers. Recognizes unsafe situations and takes corrective actions as needed and also notifies the Park Director about the hazards.
  • Performs trail maintenance on paved and unpaved trails.
  • Keeps a running inventory of park maintenance equipment and supplies
  • Assists the Director in keeping OSHA forms up to date on maintenance supplies
  • Performs routine maintenance on Park Department tools and equipment
  • Performs general facility construction and repairs including minor building construction, roofing, fencing, masonry, painting and framing.
  • Assists the Public Works Dept. with mowing, snowplowing and various maintenance activities as needed
  • Performs other work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to self initiate and recognize the maintenance needs of park facilities.
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance to established policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general preventative maintenance and upkeep of all motorized and non- motorized equipment making sure that accurate service records are kept.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform minor plumbing repairs.
  • Ability to cooperate with a wide range of individuals including co-workers and the public
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of park maintenance operations, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry and drag objects weighing up to 80 pounds as needed and manually excavate dirt, gravel, and field aggregate when necessary.
  • Ability to operate a two-way communication device
  • Ability to safely operate equipment including but not limited to a tractor mower, commercial lawn mower, push mower, weed-whip, floor polisher, floor scrubber, sweeper and snow blower attachments, scissor lift, atv, air compressor, grooming equipment and pressure washer.
  • Knowledge of ice rink maintenance and snow removal.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, crouch and stoop for long periods of time.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public and City staff.
  • Ability to apply pesticides and or herbicides in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to operate or learn how to operate heavy equipment including but not limited to; backhoe, skid steer, front-end loader and dump truck.
  • Ability to plow City streets and parking lots when needed
  • Considerable skill to drive a motor vehicle with trailer and/or heavy equipment used in maintenance of City property, cemetery and or roads.
  • Ability to effectively work in a variety of conditions which include: inclement weather, dust, pollen, loud noise, vibration or in areas where insects are present.
  • Ability to work around equipment and moving mechanical parts in a safe manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience in building maintenance and/or grounds keeping.
  • Possess and maintain a Minnesota Class D driver’s license.
  • Possession of a Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement is preferred but not required.
  • Possession of pesticide applicators license (class A, G, F) preferred but not required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $14.00 - $20.00 per hour
