Position Function/Nature of Work:

The Detective is responsible for conducting preliminary and follow-up criminal investigations and analyzing information and evidence to make an arrest.


If during the follow-up investigation of a reported offense, the Detective discovers or has reported to them an additional offense, it shall be the Detective's responsibility to ensure that an original offense report is completed on that offense.


This position involves an element of personal danger.


Special assignments are received from the Chief of Police or designee and are carried out in accordance with established law enforcement procedures and guidelines.


Must be able to wear bullet-proof vest, hard hat/helmet, safety glasses, goggles, hearing protectors, face shield and gloves.


Exposure to extreme temperatures, animals/insects, confined spaces, heights, noise, dust, vapors, fumes, mist, smoke, toxic metals, poisons, irritants, and blood borne pathogens.


Essential Duties:

  • Conducts thorough and comprehensive investigations making a sincere effort to identify and apprehend the person(s) responsible for the crime and to recover stolen property for return to the rightful owner.
  • Keeps abreast of criminal activity occurring in the City of Davenport.
  • Briefs command staff and keeps them apprised of investigations.
  • Maintains a caseload and investigates assigned cases until cleared or all leads are exhausted.
  • Is available for call outs and work flexible hours to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Checks for telephone messages and e-mail messages at least twice daily (beginning and end of shift).
  • Returns all telephone and e-mail messages in a prompt and professional manner.
  • Maintains current knowledge of legal changes.
  • Interviews / Interrogates complainants, victims, witnesses, and suspects to determine the validity and relevance of evidence collected.
  • Prepares reports to accurately document all information.
  • Drafts specific charges against arrestee(s), testifies and presents evidence in court.
  • Completes all required reports, paperwork, etc. in an orderly and timely manner.
  • Performs other work-related tasks as needed or assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing police operations, custody of prisoners, search and seizure, and the rules of evidence.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and protocols of modern police work and law enforcement methods.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of criminal investigation procedures.
  • Ability to observe situations and persons analytically and objectively.
  • Maintain assigned cases and files according to standard filing practices.
  • Knowledge to report and record situations clearly and completely.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to analyze situations, maintain composure, and make effective and reasonable decisions.
  • Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Department members, City employees, other law enforcement agencies, the State Attorney's Office, and the general public.
  • Be proficient in the use of police equipment.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak clearly in English.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be a Florida Certified law enforcement officer.
  • One (1) year experience as a police officer with Davenport Police Department.

Other requirements:

  • Must be 19 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida drivers' license.
  • Must possess an honorable military discharge if applicant has been service connected.
  • Must be a United States citizen or naturalized citizen.
  • Must pass a physical examination and drug urinalysis test.
  • Must undergo and pass a polygraph and psychological examination.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must endure a personal, professional, and moral background investigation to determine honesty, maturity, and dependability.
  • Must be available to be on call twenty-four (24) hours a day.

Licenses/Certifications:


  • Must possess a Police Standards and Training Minimum Certification and must meet any other requirements specified in the Florida Statutes for a Police Officer.

Comments:

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
