Performs work that oversees a comprehensive summer aquatics programs to include swim team, junior lifeguard, "Learn to Swim" program, summer camp, special events, and open swimming. Work is performed under general supervision of the Aquatics Manager or designee and is reviewed through evaluation of work performed, results achieved, counseling, and frequent discussions.

Salary $16.90

  • Assists the "Learn to Swim", summer camp program and other aquatic related classes and teams.
  • Assists with set up and operation of recreational swim team.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains facility records.
  • Assists Concession Attendant with daily operations to include daily admission, class fees, registrations and more if necessary.
  • Assists with the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility when necessary.
  • Establishes and adheres to the comprehensive manual.
  • Promotes and markets aquatic programs and facilities.
  • Participate in-service training for all positions on a routine basis.
  • Prepares and maintains various operational reports on attendance, inventory, first aid training, simulation activities and other relevant duties.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Must be 18 years or older.
High School Diploma or equivalent certificate
Verifiable work experience: At least six (6) months of experience as a lifeguard or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience (equal to 6 months).
Valid First Aid and CPR Certification is mandatory at hire and must be current throughout summer camp.
Must pass swimming and rescue skills test (300-yard swim in under 6 minutes, 2:00 minutes treading water, 1:40 minute drill (brick recovery)

Preferred Qualifications
Certified Water Safety Instructor, Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public recreation administration.
  • Knowledge in aquatic management and pool mechanical operations systems.
  • Knowledge of the rules of play for a variety of sports and games, and the appropriate equipment used, and facilities needed.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Skill in developing, organizing, and promoting recreational activities.
  • Skill in public relations.
  • Skill in prioritizing work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with City staff and the public.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, handle stressful situations, and adhere to prescribed routines. 
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of assigned staff.
  • Ability to work alone with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work daytime, evenings and weekends.

Physical Demands 
The physical demands involve balancing, crouching, depth perception, far acuity, hearing, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment 
The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather. The worker is subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires them to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Conditions of Employment

  • Background check (finger printing) is required; all finger prints will be checked through State of Florida’s Volunteer and Employee Criminal History System (VECHS) and the Department of Children and Families (DCF).
  • Must successfully pass drug test and physical exam.
  • Must have clean driving record and a valid driver’s license for at least 5 years to transport campers in city vehicles.
  • Mandatory First Aid & CPR Certification, and certification must be current throughout summer camp; certification mandatory prior to start date. 
  • Mandatory orientation for those selected prior to the start of camp. Location and specific dates/times will be announced at a later date.
  • Must be available to work for the entire program at assigned location.
  • Mandatory work day for the July 4th Celebration at the beach.
  • Work shifts vary from 7:30 AM – 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday. 
  • Temporary position, with no employee benefits or paid time off.
  • Training Dates are as follows but are subject to change:
  • June 3rd TBA (First Aid/CPR certification, if needed)
  • June 8th – June 10th (Staff training)
  • June 12th – August 4th (8-week summer camp)
  • August 7th – August 11th (Extended summer camp)
