Responsible for the safe and effective operation of heavy equipment to collect/dispose/process municipal solid waste.Essential Functions:
Drives solid waste collection vehicle over assigned routes to and from the sanitary landfill
Operates side-loading or front-loading lift mechanism to empty commercial dumpsters into collection vehicles or operates hydraulic lift for loading/unloading roll-off containers onto roll-off vehicle
Unloads solid waste at landfill by operation of hydraulic controls
Reports solid waste ordinance violations to supervision and customer service by way of two way radio
Performs Pre Trip and Post Trip maintenance checks of all equipment on a daily basis
May be required to respond to emergencies at all hours
Performs delivery, in-field maintenance, and inventory tracking of containers
Inspects and checks equipment before and after use, performs maintenance activities and reports problems to supervisor
Interfaces with customer regarding service problems and reports information obtained to supervisor
Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance
Additional Duties:
Assume responsibilities of supervisors in their absence
Assists in training other operators in the best and safest operations methods
Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Five (5) years’ experience in the operation of rear tandem axle truck over 30,000 GVW or a variety of multiple types of heavy equipment or five (5) years solid waste industry
Hold a valid Class “A” or “B” CDL Driver’s License with Air Brake endorsement

Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers
Ability to safely drive, back, and operate the heavy equipment on busy City streets paying close attention to other vehicles, pedestrians, team members, parked vehicles, overhead obstructions, tree limbs, etc.
Ability to operate the onboard GPS units
Ability to read a map to navigate the City of Denton
Ability to calmly think through stressful situations
Ability to direct temporary and community service personnel assigned to work site
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. repeatedly
Preferences:
Prior solid waste experience
Bilingual in Spanish and English
Prior experience in heavy equipment operations
Conditions of Employment:
Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
Must possess a valid Texas Class “A” or “B” CDL driver’s license prior to employment with air brake endorsement
Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
Must pass a physical examination
Must be able to work overtime when requested including nights and weekends
Must be able to work staggered shifts including weekends when needed
Must pass an equipment proficiency test
Must be able to work in all types of weather
