What are the responsibilities and job description for the Swim Instructor position at City of Denton?
Responsible for leading swim classes for a wide variety of age groups/skill levels.
Essential Functions:
- Instructs/assists swimming classes
- Administers periodic tests and recommends reassignments as necessary
- Performs simple record keeping tasks including the completion and issuance of certificates to participants at the completion of courses, and attendance records
- Exhibits great customer service to participants and patrons
- Promotes aquatic programming through communication to participants and patrons
- Attend trainings
- Assists in aquatic programming
- Upholds all requirements of certification through the American Red Cross including instructor updates, training, and in-services
- Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance
Additional Duties:
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Must hold a current American Red Cross CPR-Professional Rescuer and First Aid certification (or can obtain one on their own and produce a copy to the supervisor within one month of employment)
- Must be currently certified by American Red Cross as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and be able to provide Instructor Identification Number in order to be added to the City’s Authorized Provider Contract
OR
- Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

Preferences:
- Bilingual in Spanish and English
Conditions of Employment:
- Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, and social security number verification
- Must be able to work the entire season; morning, evening, and/or Saturday hours may be required
- Must be able to work complete sessions (substitution only allowed with proof of an emergency)
- Must provide Instructor Identification number from the American Red Cross prior to the first day of work
- Must pass a physical examination

Physical Requirements:

- Sedentary – lifting no more than 10 pounds
- Light – lifting no more than 20 pounds; carry up to 10 pounds

- Very Heavy – lifting more than 100 pounds, carry more than 50 pounds
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
The essential functions of this position require the daily use of kickboards, noodles, and various other aquatic teaching aides.
Environmental Factors:
The essential functions of this position are performed in chlorinated water in a natatorium or at an outdoor aquatic facility in 90-105 degree heat. Potential exists for lifting up to 50 pounds to assist swim participants. Instructors may incur repeated emersions of up to two hours in pool water. Water temperature may vary from 78-90 degrees.
