SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Division Supervisor, the Equipment Operator performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment, and light to heavy duty trucks. Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties related to construction and maintenance of city streets, alleys, right of ways, public lands, city facilities and other related work as required. Will safely operate heavy equipment and machinery to assist in the maintenance and repair of the City's sewer lines and residential water services. Will prepare machinery and equipment to locate lines, replace meters, perform preventative maintenance, and assist department crew with manual tasks. May be assigned to streets, utilities, or grounds division.
Supervision: Reports to: Division Supervisor
Position will not have direct supervision over other staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
HS Diploma/GED and at least one year of experience.
License and Certifications:
Valid Texas Driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Class A Texas Commercial Driver’s License if preferred, but only a Class B is required. Must be able to obtain a CDL Class B licenses within six (6) months of employment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
· Operates vehicles and equipment such as dump trucks, water truck, backhoe, tractor with shredder or auger, lawn tractors, trencher, steel wheel roller, motor grader, chip spreaders, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), weed eaters, trailers, shop tools and various mechanized and non-mechanized hand tools.
· Loads and unloads materials such as dirt, asphalt, gravel, storm drainpipes, and sign materials.
· Performs the cleaning, washing, preventative maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.
· Performs minor repairs on machinery and equipment
· Performs laborer type duties such as racking and sweeping loose gravel, shoveling hot mix, and cutting grass.
· Performs traffic control tasks for street maintenance operations and various city events.
· Waters, mows, repairs, maintains, and cleans public lands, thoroughfares, and rights-of-way.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
· Must be available to work overtime, available for call out after hours and weekends including holidays.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Knowledge in the mechanical operation of light equipment, common tools, materials, and methods used in maintenance and construction work.
· Knowledge of using safe and effective operating practices in accordance with City and State safety policies and procedures.
· Skilled in operation of dump trucks, backhoes, tractors, and various other large pieces of equipment used to perform street and park maintenance.
· Skilled in making repairs and adjustments to equipment.
· Skilled in transporting equipment and tools to work sites.
· Ability to assist other departments with construction and equipment operation.
· Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time on/or around hot asphalt.
· Ability to understand, follow verbal and written instructions.
